ReplyThanks for your comments - and critique - on this story, which is more than a year old, "Big John Dingell." Forgive the there/their mix-up. A slip-up, unfortunately, and an editing oversight.
As for your comment calling my statement about AP style false and absurd, you do not know what you are talking about.

ReplyMr. Carr,
Thanks for writing. You raise meaningful points.
Yes, the meeting did take place in less than a half hour, about 25 minutes.
I'm sorry if the story leaves the impression that the mayor was serious about entertaining the audience. He made the comments in jest.
Lastly, this was a public meeting as is every council meeting - unless the council breaks into closed session to discuss topics that are allowed by law to be discussed privately.
The meeting agendas are posted on the Friday prior to the Monday meetings. There is always an opportunity for the public to comment.
If you wish to comment on the DDA agreement being continued or any other topic the next meeting is in two weeks unless it is adjourned. If so, it will be posted on the city website. As for how the DDA money has been spent that is something the public is entitled to know. That info could be obtained under the Freedom Of Information Act.
My apologies if you're familiar with all of this, but I did want to respond.
Thanks for reading Patch.

ReplyThe question about the DNR's control of the water did come up and Chief Hiller said that under MCL (Michigan Compiled Law) 780.51 the city is permitted to enact controls such as this. I have not researched the DNR rules for this situation or the MCL.

ReplyI see your point, and I want to point out I do indeed respect Father Pelc or Father Tim, as most know him.
But journalistic Associated Press style is to use the last name on second and subsequent references.

ReplyBrian,
I also agree with Melissa, but your additional remarks are unfair and uninformed.
This story is being read by people who love and care deeply for this family, including children, and to use it as a venue to put down Miles Murray's principal, who is a woman by the way, is just sad.
The one paragraph about auctioning a ride on a fire truck came in a roundabout way from the city, not the school, to the Patch editor, who just so happened to add it to the story after I wrote it.
It is very much a side note to this story and had no effect whatsoever on Miles and Peyton's experience with the firefighters.
We can't make any assumptions about the administrator, her motives, etc. based on this limited information.
I hope you understand and I truly do appreciate your exchanges on Patch. -

ReplyThe auction would be for Miles' school, Maire. If you're interested in helping Miles or in attending the auction, please let me know.

Chris, yes, not much happened at the meeting which literally lasted five minutes until two residents addressed the council about their concerns, one being one of the men in this story, the other a man asking when street lights would be working again.
A story is coming on DTE's repair of lights in the Park.
The council's agenda was three items long: the purchase of a DPW vehicle, appointments to the beautification commission and routine approval of invoices.
As for your concerns about public safety being discussed please know two things: Patch is running a separate story about the capture of the 16-year-old who escaped custody last week. This is not a council matter per se and no council members or audience members brought it up.
If you want the council to discuss this situation or crime in general in the city, you could address it at the meeting.
As for there being more important concerns than where garbage goes, this is a quality of life issue for at least one resident and it's a slice of life so we wrote about it.
Thank you for reading Patch.
