A political expert said Michigan could be “ground zero for a recall vote” against Snyder in 2013.
Could the sudden passage of the highly controversial right-to-work legislation lead to Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder's name appearing on a statewide ballot for something other than his re-election campaign? One political expert thinks it's possible. Joshua Spivak, a senior fellow at Wagner College’s Hugh L. Nearly 70 percent of registered voters cast votes Tuesday in the general election.
The St. Clair Shores City Clerk reported Wednesday a "successful" general election with nearly 70 percent of registered voters casting ballots. According to unofficial results, there was a 69 percent turnout of eligible voters on Election Day. The office also issued 10,401 ballots, with 98 percent returned and counted on Election Day. "We had a very good election, taking into account the long ballots. It could take a voter from 5-15 minutes to cast a ballot," City Clerk Mary A. Kotowski wrote in an email. Voters in St. Clair Shores returned Sarah Roberts to the Michigan House of Representatives, Michael Boyle and Veronica Klinefelt to the Macomb County Board of Commissioners and retained the incumbents on the Lake Shore Board of Education.
Former State Rep. Sarah Roberts will return to the Michigan House of Representatives after defeating Candice Rusie in the general election, according to unofficial results from the Macomb County Clerk's Office. Roberts, a Democrat, received 65 percent of the vote in the Michigan House District 18 race against Rusie, a Republican, who is currently a member of the St. Clair Shores City Council. Roberts served in the Michigan House from 2008-2010. Voters also elected Veronica Klinefelt, a Democrat, to the District 3 seat in the Macomb County Board of Commissioners. Voters throughout Michigan chose Barack Obama over Mitt Romney for president, according to early results, and voted no on at least five of the six state proposals. Michiganders also chose incumbent Democrat Debbie Stabenow over Republican challenger Pete Hoekstra for Senate, according to early results. Voter turnout was reported to be high across the state. In 2008, 66.2 percent of Michigan's registered voters cast ballots, the highest number since 1968 when voter turnout was 66.8 percent. Voters across Macomb County Tuesday returned incumbents to county-wide offices.
Voters across Macomb County returned incumbents to office Tuesday and voted down a millage for Macomb Community College. With 100 percent of the vote tallied, Democrats have dominated county races. Macomb County Prosecuting Attorney Eric J. Smith received 65 percent of the vote over Republican challenger Michael R. Wrathell. Anthony Wickersham won his first run for sheriff as a candidate. The incumbent Democrat has a strong lead -- with 61 percent of the vote -- over his challengers, Republican Steve Thomas and Libertarian Scott W. Allen. Exit polls show voters backing Barack Obama; national media give the state's 16 electoral votes to the president.
The polls have not been closed long, but based on exit polls results several media organizations have declared President Barack Obama the winner of Michigan's 16 electoral votes on Tuesday, defeating Republican and native son Mitt Romney. NBC, NPR, CNN, the Wall Street Journal and the Washington Post all have declared Obama the winner. Media outlets also have called the overall race for Obama. In the 2008 presidential election, the state voted for the Democratic candidate, and in recent elections has voted for the overall winner of the presidential race 3 out of 5 times. The Huffington Post reports a second-grader in St. Clair Shores set up his own polling in his home after voting with his parents.
Dave Nielsen shared a story with HuffPost that his 7-year-old son, Max, set up a polling place in their St. Clair Shores home after watching his parents vote. Max Nielsen, a second-grader, set up the polling place with ballots that included two names—his name and Mitt Romney. "I had the honor of voting this morning, and will have the pleasure of voting for probably most of the day," Nielsen told HuffPost. Unofficial polls in the Nielsen household have Max leading Romney, according to the story.
Michigan's voting goes until 8 p.m., but some polls elsewhere close earlier.
Michigan voters have until 8 p.m. Eastern to cast their Election 2012 ballots, but voting in other key swing states ends as much as an hour earlier, and exit polling could provide an early clue whether President Obama or Mitt Romney is closer to the White House. The earliest key state to watch is Virginia, where polls close at 7 p.m. Eastern. Voting ends 30 minutes later in the swing states of Ohio and North Carolina. As Michigan's polls close, the swing states of Florida, Pennsylvania and New Hampshire close their polls, too. Nevada and Iowa, two other swing states that could prove pivotal in this year's presidential election, close voting at 10 p.m. Eastern. Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 6, for the general election. St. Clair Shores voters can see their ballots and find their voting location before they hit the polls.
