Anthony Wickersham took office Jan. 1 and began his first full term as the Macomb County Sheriff.
The start of the new year marked the beginning of the latest chapter in the law enforcement career of Anthony Wickersham. Wickersham, 51, joined the Macomb County Sheriff's Department in 1986 as a correctional officer and has held every rank in the department including sheriff—a position he was appointed to in 2011. The 46th Macomb County Sheriff ran for re-election in November and defeated Steve Thomas to win a full, four-year term. Voters across Macomb County Tuesday returned incumbents to county-wide offices.
Voters across Macomb County returned incumbents to office Tuesday and voted down a millage for Macomb Community College. With 100 percent of the vote tallied, Democrats have dominated county races. Macomb County Prosecuting Attorney Eric J. Smith received 65 percent of the vote over Republican challenger Michael R. Wrathell. Anthony Wickersham won his first run for sheriff as a candidate. Macomb Patch recently spoke with Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham to learn more about the man and Macomb Township resident in charge of the county's largest law enforcement service.
The 46th sheriff of Macomb County, Anthony “Tony” Wickersham, 50, has served in the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office for more than 26 years. Leaving his family’s restaurant business for a career in law enforcement, Wickersham earned his associate's degree at Macomb Community College and started in the sheriff’s office in 1986. He would later graduate from the Northwestern University Center of Public Safety School of Police Staff and Command and earn a bachelor's degree from Wayne State University. Moving up the ranks, Wickersham was appointed to succeed Mark Hackel as sheriff on Dec. 17, 2010. With his appointment up this year, Wickersham has chosen to run for re-election. More than 75 citizens and law enforcement officers were recipients of Macomb County Sheriff's Recognition Awards this week.
From the resident whose quick thinking saved the life of a neighbor to the deputy who went the extra mile to bring a drug dealer to justice, Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham recognized the actions of these individuals and more at the ninth annual Sheriff's Recognition Awards ceremony Wednesday in Macomb Township. The three-day "Operation Safeguard" marks the first time the Macomb County Sheriff's Office and U.S. Marshals Service have partnered on an intensive multi-day sweep of sex offenders and fugitives.
Fifty-seven of Macomb County’s most dangerous fugitives and sex offenders are behind bars today following an intensive three-day search orchestrated by the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office and U.S. Marshals Service. The budget may be a little leaner next year, but Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham is actually hoping to expand his office’s operations and services in 2012-13. Wickersham, who spoke to the Macomb County Democratic Committee on the “State of the Sheriff” Oct. 26, touched on cuts to the 2012-13 budget, the continued need for a new jail and possibly expanding the sheriff’s presence in northern Macomb County in the new year. Ten years after terrorist attacks, local first responders still feel loss.
A crowd gathered in downtown Mount Clemens Sunday to mark the somber 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks and the lives that were lost in New York, the Pentagon, and United Airlines Flight 93 in Pennsylvania. Police, firefighters, emergency medical service providers and community members stood at the Macomb County Fallen Heroes Memorial in front of the Macomb County Circuit Court to pay tribute to those who lost their lives.
