Earth Day 2013: Celebrate the Planet in Metro Detroit

Activities are planned throughout the region to celebrate Earth Day.

Although Earth Day is observed April 22, there are activities before and after the date to commemorate the occasion. To illustrate these events, Patch is highlighting a poster created by Matthew Devine of Elmwood Elementary School. The kindergarten student was the 1st Place Poster Winner in the 2013 Earth Day Poster Contest. The contest drew 2,500 posters from 150 Michigan schools, according to the Pure Michigan Connect website. The Rain Forest Comes to the Shores

Students in St. Clair Shores received an interactive and informative assembly with animals from the rain forest.

Assemblies at Elmwood and Rodgers elementary schools got a little "wild" Thursday as Ohio-based Understanding Wildlife brought a variety of animals from the rain forest to the children. Exotic snakes, monkeys and birds were some of the animals students were able to see, and learn about, from Mike Kohlrieser, Understanding Wildlife director. In addition to introducing the animals to the students, and describing their habitat and personalities, Kohlrieser urged the children to do their part to recycle, conserve and learn about the rain forest. "We've got to take care of our Earth, if our Earth is going to take care of us," he said. Understanding Wildlife will have two evening shows for the community tonight at Avalon Elementary with shows at…
