VFW Post 4659 will host a Loyalty Day ceremony Wednesday featuring speeches from local dignitaries.
Members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars from Macomb and Oakland counties will gather Wednesday at the VFW Post 4659 for a Loyalty Day ceremony. The annual event will feature a presentation of colors and speeches by Macomb County Commissioner Don Brown, attorney Ralph Maccarone and 41-A District Court Chief Judge Stephen Sierawski. "(Loyalty Day) is to remember our founders, celebrate our freedoms and remember our responsibilities," said Jim Van Tiem, commander for Macomb County Council of the VFW. The doors open at 7 p.m., with the ceremony starting at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the "Old Settlers" Post. During a last-minute visit to Utica Monday to speak to veterans at an American Legion Post 351, Arizona Sen. John McCain told supporters that the GOP would put better policies in place for veterans returning to civilian life.
While campaigning on behalf of Republican Presidential Candidate Mitt Romney Monday at the American Legion Post 351 in Utica, Arizona Sen. John McCain slammed President Barack Obama for looming military cuts and a high unemployment rate for veterans. “There is a 14 percent unemployment rate for veterans nationwide,” said McCain, compared to an eight percent unemployment rate in the U.S. “We should be embarrassed,” he added. McCain, joined by Congresswoman Candice Miller (R-District 10), first held a round table discussion with eight people ranging from local veteran coordinators to military defense contractors. The nine-foot granite memorial will be located at the corner of Cass and Gratiot avenues in Mount Clemens. It is expected to be unveiled this July.
Pass by the Macomb County Administration Building today and a 4-by-4 block of concrete is the only indication that this location will one day be home to the “Heart of America,” Macomb County’s first memorial to the servicemen and women killed in the war on terrorism. The monument itself won’t be ready until July, but local officials, members of VFW Mount Clemens Post 1794 and the memorial’s designers broke ground Tuesday on the monument’s future home at the corner of Gratiot and Cass avenues in Mount Clemens. “This memorial is going to the soldiers who gave their lives in the global war on terrorism,” said Phil Randazzo, a Shelby Township resident and Vietnam veteran who was instrumental in bringing the monument to Macomb. “We wanted to …
