Dear Editor, Where's the Republican representative's response to the same questions? Where's the objective reporting? To Ms. Roberts - EVERYONE now has to pay 2% more in Federal income tax due to fiscal irresponsibility. As a self-employed 1099 contracted worker, I now have to hold back 45% of my paycheck to pay JUST my INCOME taxes. ADD IN all taxes from property tax, phone, cable, sales, …   more ›

State Sen. Steve Bieda, D-Warren, led the Michigan Electoral College delegates in the Pledge of Allegiance Monday at the State Capitol.

State Sen. Steve Bieda, D-Warren, led Michigan’s Electoral College delegates in the Pledge of Allegiance Monday during a ceremony in the State Senate chambers to cast Michigan’s 16 electoral votes to President Barack Obama. “I was deeply honored to participate in Michigan’s Electoral College vote.  As a history buff, my participation in this constitutionally mandated event was an honor that I will always remember,” said Sen. Bieda, in a release. “The re-election of President Obama is an historic event, and I was humbled to play a role in today’s ceremonies. Michigan directly benefited from President Obama’s efforts to revitalize America’s auto industry. We’ve seen the big three hire more workers and make further investments in our state. I…

10,000 Protesters Descend on Capitol Tuesday to Fight Michigan Right-to-Work Legislation

The bills were signed into law by Gov. Rick Snyder on Tuesday.

LANSING - People came from as close as down the street and as far as Chicago and Wisconsin, joining thousands of union members in a protest against right-to-work legislation Tuesday in Lansing. Despite the roar of the crowds lining the lawn of the Capitol building and surrounding streets, two pieces of legislation passed by the Senate last week made their way through the state House of Representatives and were signed into law by Gov. Rick Snyder Tuesday afternoon. 10,000 on the Capitol lawn Michigan State Police estimated that protesters at the Capitol numbered around 10,000 on Tuesday. Most were union members and supporters, while a small contingent of tea party and Americans for Prosperity members—both of which support right-to-work …

Damn shame a perfectly legal and peaceful protest has to be ruined by a small chosen few. Those for right to work legislation had every right to be there, yet a small band of union thugs, and I say thugs because that's what you are when you damage other's property and try to trample their rights...had to bring the tent down. When will they learn? You are trying to encourage membership, how about …   more ›

Your Guide to Right-to-Work Bills, Lawmakers' Votes

Legislation passed last week in the Michigan House and Senate could reach Gov. Rick Snyder for his signature by Tuesday. Both of St. Clair Shores' representatives in Lansing voted against the Right to Work legislation.

Demonstrators took to the Capitol steps Monday in Lansing to sound off on right-to-work legislation that is poised to become law after Gov. Rick Snyder did an abrupt about-face on the issue last week and a series of related bills passed in the House and Senate. Larger protests are expected today when the legislation could reach Snyder's desk for his signature. Patch will be live-blogging from Lansing as the situation develops. [Are you participating in the demonstrations? Leave a comment, upload a photo or e-mail St. Clair Shores Patch editor Edward Cardenas] Read on for a description of each bill and to find out how lawmakers who represent St. Clair Shores voted. Update From State Sen. Steve Bieda

Sen. Bieda shares his thoughts from and updates from Lansing.

Dear Friend, This weekend is the Memorial Day Weekend. In the minds of many, this marks the “official” start of summer. With warming weather and sunny days, it certainly does feel as if summer has finally arrived. As we take to the outdoors with our friends and family, I hope that we all take a minute to remember that we have this weekend to enjoy because of the sacrifices made by our women and men in uniform. I wish you all a happy Memorial Day and hope that you enjoy the weekend safely and responsibly.
