Dear Editor, Where's the Republican representative's response to the same questions? Where's the objective reporting? To Ms. Roberts - EVERYONE now has to pay 2% more in Federal income tax due to fiscal irresponsibility. As a self-employed 1099 contracted worker, I now have to hold back 45% of my paycheck to pay JUST my INCOME taxes. ADD IN all taxes from property tax, phone, cable, sales, …   more ›

State Rep. Anthony Forlini Reflects on Past Term

State Rep. Anthony Forlini recently took some time look back on the past two years representing St. Clair Shores in Lansing.

The past two years have been a bit of a homecoming for State Rep. Anthony Forlini, R-Harrison Township. Forlini spent his childhood in St. Clair Shores, and when he returned to the city as a candidate in 2010, he encountered childhood friends and their parents who still live in the community and know him as "Anthony" and not the less-formal "Tony." "For me it is a sad time," said Forlini, who admires the sense of community in St. Clair Shores. "I grew up in the Shores and I was so excited to run in the Shores." But under redistricting, Forlini's district—which included Harrison Township and St. Clair Shores—was redrawn, and it omitted his childhood home and included Clinton Township. While today is his first day representing this new …

A View from the Capitol

A View from the Capitol

State Rep. Anthony Forlini, R-Harrison Township, shares his thoughts from Lansing.

From My Desk in Lansing It doesn't seem long ago when I first walked into the capitol in January 2011 to take the official oath of office for state representative of the 24th House District. The past 24 months have been filled with our efforts at the state to help Michigan reinvent itself. Remember, we were 50th in the country in most categories. Unemployment was around 15 percent. And the general moral of our friends and neighbors was that Michigan's best days were behind them. I, along with my new colleagues, were determined to change the mood around Lansing and step away from the previous administration's policies that were simply kicking the can down the road. These were not quick or simple changes.  Whether it was tax reform, …

How Many Votes Did St. Clair Shores Lawmakers Miss in 2012?

The city's representatives in the Michigan House and Senate had nearly perfect voting records.

It was a busy year in Lansing and we've got the scoop on how legislators representing St. Clair Shores performed. Overall in Michigan, 13 of 38 senators had perfect voting records, while 62 out of 110 representatives did the same on roll call votes taken from Jan. 1, 2012, through Dec. 31, 2012, according to michiganvotes.org. Read on to find out how lawmakers representing St. Clair Shores performed during the same period. Sen. Bert Johnson, D-Detroit, representing the 2nd District, missed the most votes in the Senate with 111; Rep. Rep. Jimmy Womack, D-Detroit, representing the 7th District, missed the most votes in the House with 409. Legislators will return to Lansing on Jan. 9 for the start of the Michigan House and Senate's 2013 …

10,000 Protesters Descend on Capitol Tuesday to Fight Michigan Right-to-Work Legislation

The bills were signed into law by Gov. Rick Snyder on Tuesday.

LANSING - People came from as close as down the street and as far as Chicago and Wisconsin, joining thousands of union members in a protest against right-to-work legislation Tuesday in Lansing. Despite the roar of the crowds lining the lawn of the Capitol building and surrounding streets, two pieces of legislation passed by the Senate last week made their way through the state House of Representatives and were signed into law by Gov. Rick Snyder Tuesday afternoon. 10,000 on the Capitol lawn Michigan State Police estimated that protesters at the Capitol numbered around 10,000 on Tuesday. Most were union members and supporters, while a small contingent of tea party and Americans for Prosperity members—both of which support right-to-work …

Damn shame a perfectly legal and peaceful protest has to be ruined by a small chosen few. Those for right to work legislation had every right to be there, yet a small band of union thugs, and I say thugs because that's what you are when you damage other's property and try to trample their rights...had to bring the tent down. When will they learn? You are trying to encourage membership, how about …   more ›

Your Guide to Right-to-Work Bills, Lawmakers' Votes

Legislation passed last week in the Michigan House and Senate could reach Gov. Rick Snyder for his signature by Tuesday. Both of St. Clair Shores' representatives in Lansing voted against the Right to Work legislation.

Demonstrators took to the Capitol steps Monday in Lansing to sound off on right-to-work legislation that is poised to become law after Gov. Rick Snyder did an abrupt about-face on the issue last week and a series of related bills passed in the House and Senate. Larger protests are expected today when the legislation could reach Snyder's desk for his signature. Patch will be live-blogging from Lansing as the situation develops. [Are you participating in the demonstrations? Leave a comment, upload a photo or e-mail St. Clair Shores Patch editor Edward Cardenas] Read on for a description of each bill and to find out how lawmakers who represent St. Clair Shores voted. The legislation that would make Michigan a "right-to-work" state was passed …

A View from the Capitol

A View from the Capitol

State Rep. Anthony Forlini, R-Harrison Township, shares his thoughts from Lansing.

From My Desk in Lansing Michiganders across this beautiful state can attest that summer has flown by once again.  Alice Cooper’s “School’s Out” no longer applies, as our children flock back to the classrooms.  Now, we can look forward to good times ahead.  Our climate is changing in Michigan; both in terms of weather, and signs of economic recovery.  I have enjoyed the ability these past weeks to focus on subjects that directly relate to those I represent in the 24th District.  I have spent much of my time on local concerns such as, the water quality issues involving Lake St. Clair. Water Quality Town Hall We hosted a Water Quality Town Hall on Sept. 5th at MacRay Harbor as a follow-up to last year’s Town Hall on water quality issues. The …

High Levels of Human Bacteria Found Along Lake St. Clair Beaches

Extensive testing of bacteria taken from water samples along Lake St. Clair discovered high concentrations of human DNA.

An extensive test of water samples taken in 2011 at St. Clair Shores Memorial Beach and Metro Beach by Michigan State University discovered bacteria with high levels of human DNA. The findings were presented during a Water Quality Town Hall hosted by State Rep. Anthony Forlini, R-Harrison Township., at MacRay Harbor. "We found some markers that are human specific," said Dr. Joan B. Rose, Michigan State University, who found higher levels at the St. Clair Shores beach. "We've got greater human signatures impacting Memorial Beach more so than Metro Beach." The nine samples were taken over a two-month period during the summer of 2011 and tested the levels of E. coli, the levels of bacteria from warm blooded animals and the levels with human …

Remember: Dogs are NOT allowed in the Walter & Mary Burke Park in New Baltimore because - one might poop on the grounds and no one will clean it up - BUT seagulls / geese and the likes poop on the walkways and beaches and it is OK. State Rep. Anthony Forlini to Host Water Quality Town Hall

State Rep. Anthony Forlini, R-Harrison Township, will hold a town Wednesday to discuss water quality and a review of the lake muck which has accumulated along the waterfront.

Three water quality specialists will be providing an update tonight on water testing of Lake St. Clair during the summer of 2011 by Michigan Department of Environmental Quality. The testing, done at the urging of State Rep. Anthony Forlini, R-Harrison Township, was conducted after residents reported a buildup of muck along the waterfront. Initial reports in 2011 by the Department of Environmental Quality determined the muck along the shoreline was caused by algae and is found throughout the Great Lakes region. "We just never knew where this E. coli was coming from. We have some scientific back up for the first time as to what this DNA profile is of the E. coli," Forlini said at a recent St. Clair Shores City Council meeting. "We have data …
