Detroit Sports Commission's New Mascot Has Shelby Township Roots

Shelby Township resident Shelly Watkins wins Detroit Sports Commission's online mascot naming competition.

The Detroit Sports Detroit Sports Commission’s new mascot, Champ, has roots in from right here in Shelby Township. Patch.com contributor Shelly Watkins, of Shelby Township, named the new mascot by submitting the winning entry for an online competition to name the new mascot. "I follow the Detroit Sports Commission on Facebook and saw the mascot-naming contest there," said Watkins.  "Champ was the only name I submitted as I thought it was very positive and classic.  Also, it fits perfectly with the Detroit Sports Commission's tagline, 'Where champions are made and championships are played.'  Detroit has crowed many champs through the years and I believe that with the help of the Sports Commission, we will celebrate many more in the future…

Balancing Extra-curricular Activities

A new school year brings about new schedules, new commitments, and often times an overflowing calendar of events. Let the balancing act begin!

There is little doubt that the schedules of most families today are overflowing with extra-curricular activities: dance practice, soccer and football just to name a few. The options are endless for organized activities in our society. Every second of everyday could virtually be filled if you so desired, but what if you are yearning for some balance? How do you choose what your children participate in? A wise family friend of mine gave me some advice on this, and I thought I would share with all of you! When the kids are in bed sit down with your significant other and make a list of goals for each of your children (15-25 life goals). Yes, each child should have their own list. What direction do you desire your children to go? What do you …

Winning and Losing a Fact of Life

We all like to win, but "losing is a fact of life too. What lessons are we teaching our children?

Let’s face it we all like to win. However, when raising children the coping skills of losing are an essential fact of life too. No one can win all the time. From job interviews to a family game night of Hungry Hippos, there is always going to be a winner and a loser. It is how one copes and accepts the final result that matters most. If one interviews for a job and does not get the job, is there disappointment? Absolutely! Losing only makes us stronger. We learn from our mistakes and how to do better in the future. If we are not taught as children how to lose, we grow up thinking the world is out to get us and accepting our failures is a near impossible task. If our child loses in the big game do we let them pout, whine and cry about it? …

As a sports official I see this all the time. I can usually tell which team is going to win before the game starts by its attitude during warm ups. I pay attention to the way the coaches talk to the kids and how the kids react. I dread doing the smaller kids' games because the parents can be such jerks. They need to realize that I DON"T CARE who wins or loses.   more ›

Creating a Healthy You

Join me on a parenthood exercise challenge to creating a healthy you!

Okay, so I’m hardly an athlete but I have always managed to live an active life style. Dancing, swimming, cheerleading and classes at the local gym. I worked out the entire nine months with my first-born, and three kids later, what happened? Sure, I have been able to lose all the baby weight, but something happens the older you get. Your body changes and things just don’t look or work the way they used to. Recently, I tried to show my oldest how to do the monkey bars at the park and nearly pulled every muscle in my back. Ouch! Thank you, to Chase Chiropractic for always fixing my issues. I thought, “man do I need to exercise!" What happen to the monkey bar, tree climbing and foot-loose and fancy-girl I used to be? Gasp, did I say the word …

Metro East Team Heads to Meijer State Games

St. Clair Shores' Joe Vitale and Austin Lane were chosen to participate on Metro East hockey team at the Meijer State Games of Michigan this weekend.

The 2011 Metro East boys high school hockey team only has six hours to get ready for the Meijer State Games of Michigan. Six hours of on-ice practice time is all that is allowed for this team of 20 boys from eight different high schools to train together before heading to the Meijer State Games of Michigan in Grand Rapids this weekend. The team will compete in the eight team high school hockey showcase June 23-26. "We'll have four skates of an hour-and-a-half each that these boys will go through and then we'll play next weekend," Metro East general manager Mike Ulicny said.  "The toughest thing for all of the teams participating I imagine will be getting them to know one another. That will be the trickiest thing." In its second year, the …

Ice Cream Delivers a Taste of Summer

Spring brings anticipation for the sounds of summer: birds chirping, park swings squeaking and music drifting from the ice cream truck.

As the weather begins to slowly break here in Michigan, one of my family’s favorite summertime treats is (Can you guess? Yep!) a good ice cream. Oh, how I love the sounds of summer: The birds chirping, the swings at the park squeaking and the ice cream truck. Okay, so maybe the sound of the ice cream truck sometimes. It never fails he comes around at nap time or dinner!  My thoughts begin to take me to those warm evenings when dinner is done, the kitchen is clean and an evening walk with a stop at the local ice cream shop is in order. Mmmm, the taste of summer! It is safe to say that I love ice cream probably as much as I love my coffee. That means I really like it! Wally’s Frozen Custard in Harper Woods is one of our local family …

'Underdog' Huskies' Historic Playoff Run Continues vs. De La Salle

Lakeview hopes to take down the Pilots Friday night in the second round of playoffs.

It is early November, and the Lakeview football team is in unchartered territory. After years of coming close, the Huskies finally qualified for the playoffs this season, a first in school history. The team, which was considered the "underdog," beat Port Huron Northern, 17-0, Friday. With the win, Lakeview's historic football playoff run continues Friday when the Huskies travel to Warren Fitzgerald to play De La Salle. "(The Pilots) have gone to the finals two of the three past years," said Pat Threet, Lakeview coach. "If you want to be the best, you have to be beat the best." Getting to this point this season marks a major turn around for the Huskies, who two years ago were 2-7, and last year missed the playoffs by one game. This year …
