Who is a Teacher You Appreciate in St. Clair Shores?

Tuesday is Teacher Appreciation Day. Who is a teacher past or present in St. Clair Shores who has made a difference in your life, or your child's life?

Teachers are being honored across St. Clair Shores for their work in the classroom, assisting in after-school activities and contributing to the community. Patch wants to recognize teachers past and present who have made a difference in your life, and in the lives of your children. Reader Marsha Salome previously shared a story about a teacher, and school, that made a difference for her son, Peter. "My son is affected by autism and had a successful inclusion experience at Koepsell Education Center, one of the elementary schools in the South Lake district.  Autism is a neurologically based disorder that can affect behavior, socialization, and language as well as cause/contribute to sensory impairment.  Peter joined Koepsell in kindergarten…

South Lake Schools to Host Kindergarten Enrollment Fair

Families interested in enrolling their children in preschool, or kindergarten, with South Lake Schools can attend an enrollment fair Saturday.

South Lake Schools will hold kindergarten and preschool enrollment fair Saturday. The event will be held at Elmwood Elementary School from 10 a.m. - noon. The school is located at 22700 California. Parents and students will be able to enroll, meet teachers and principals, take a bus ride, enjoy an inflatable bounce house and free snacks.

South Lake Student Helping Keep Feet Warm

South Lake student Cassandra Kury recently held a a successful sock drive for those in need.

Cassandra Kury, a South Lake Middle School student, collected over 185 pairs of socks through her "Warm Hearts/Cold Feet" campaign. According to a post on the St. Clair Shores Patch Facebook page, the eighth grade student held a sock drive to coincide with a sock drive held by her church. Through the generosity of her friends and family from as far away as Florida, Illinois and Pennsylvania, she was able to give the socks she collected to her church. The socks will be donated to those in need in the community. Shelly Voss Kury wrote, "Proud to say that Cassie is a Cavalier!"

Lakeview, Lake Shore and South Lake MEAP Results To Be Released Today

Check back with St. Clair Shores Patch at 10 a.m. Monday for a look at how students fared on their Fall 2012 Michigan Education Assessment Program exams.

Michigan students' MEAP results will be released Monday morning for students in Lakeview, Lake Shore and South Lake districts and in all public schools across the state. The results were scheduled to be released at 10 a.m. The Michigan Education Assessment Program exam assesses students in grades 3 through 9: The annual test is designed to show students' proficiency in career- and college-ready materials. The MEAP is administered by the Department of Education, which is releasing the data on Monday. The MEAP as a standard of measuring student achievement is on its way out; beginning in the 2014-15 school year, students will be given an online exam to test their knowledge of core subjects. Winter Storm Closes Schools in St. Clair Shores

Area public and private schools including Lake Shore, Lakeview and South Lake are also closed.

Students in St. Clair Shores will have a three-day weekend after a night of snow. Schools closed due to inclement weather Friday morning include: Lakeshore YMCA Child Care Center will have a delayed start and will open at 8 a.m. Friday. Additionally, the pep rally at Lake Shore High School has been rescheduled for Thursday, February 14, which is the last day before mid-winter break. The Snowcoming dance will still take place on Saturday. Also, Saturday school is still scheduled for Saturday morning. City Crews, Schools Prepare for Snowstorm

With the another winter storm forecast to hit St. Clair Shores Thursday into Friday, Patch checked with local districts and the city to check on preparations for the snowy weather.

St. Clair Shores remains under a winter weather advisory starting at 7 p.m. Thursday and running through noon Friday, according to the National Weather Service. The snow is expected to cause "travel difficulties" including slippery roads and limited visibilites. School planning According to officials South Lake Schools, when there is inclimate weather  facilities directors and superintendents in Macomb County have an early morning conference call. During the call is when decisions are made to close school based on weather. Lake Shore officials added that "the safety and education of our nearly 3,500 students are our main priorities, as well as travel conditions for all our employees," they stated in an email. Gas Leak Causes Evacuation of Elmwood Elementary School

Students and staff were temporarily evacuated Thursday morning from Elmwood Elementary School due to a gas leak at Kipling and Englehardt.

Students and staff at Elmwood Elementary School were temporarily evacuated Thursday morning due to a gas leak at Kipling and Englehardt in St. Clair Shores. Consumers Energy informed South Lake Schools during the 9 a.m. hour that crews were capping a gas leak at the intersection and advised district administration to begin the process of evacuating students and staff from the building. According to a post on the district Facebook page, emergency procedures were immediately followed as students and staffed were bussed to South Lake High School. While students were being transferred, Consumers Energy crews were able to cap the leak and allow students and staff to return to the school. Dan Bishop, a Consumers Energy spokesman, wrote in an …
