A St. Clair Shores teenager who pleaded guilty to a charge of assault with intent to do great bodily harm for the stabbing of his best friend was placed on three year probation Wednesday by Macomb Circuit Court Judge Mary Chrzanowski. A grateful Shane Spatafore shook his lawyer's hand and looked to the ceiling after he received the sentence, which allows him to complete his high school degree and pursue a college education. The charges stemmed from the Sept. 3 incident where Spatafore got into an argument and stabbed his 17-year-old friend four times with a steak knife. A St. Clair Shores teenager accused of stabbing his best friend pleaded guilty Tuesday to a reduced charge of assault with intent to do great bodily harm before his trial was scheduled to begin in Macomb Circuit Court. Shane Spatafore had been originally charged with assault with intent to murder for stabbing his friend at a sleepover on Sept. 3. At the request of the family, the charge of assault with intent to do great bodily harm was added. It carries a maximum sentence of 10 years. A trial for a St. Clair Shores teenager accused of stabbing his "best friend" is scheduled to begin Tuesday in Macomb Circuit Court. Shane Spatafore reportedly got in an argument Sept. 3 with his friend, grabbed a steak knife and stabbed him four times. St. Clair Shores Police Detective Margaret Eidt stated during his arraignment that the force of the stabbings bent the knife blade, punctured a lung and may have caused internal bleeding. The defense attorney for a 17-year-old St. Clair Shores teen charged with stabbing his friend argued Tuesday to have his client's bond reduced. David Pietroski was able to have the bond for Shane Spatafore reduced from $200,000 to $75,000, or 10 percent. While the bond was reduced, 40th District Court Judge Joseph Oster attached a number of requirements. Spatafore will be placed on a tether and will be on house arrest, submit to drug tests and have no contact with the victim or anyone else in the case directly or indirectly through family, friends or supporters. The defense attorney for Shane Spatafore unsuccessfully argued Friday in 40th District Court to have his client's $200,000 bond reduced. Spatafore, who is charged with stabbing his friend with a kitchen knife Sept. 3, has been held in Macomb County Jail since he was charged with assault with intent to murder. David Pietroski stated in 40th District Court that his client is a senior at Lake Shore High School and was carrying a 3.2 grade point average and has plans to attend Michigan State University. The defense attorney for Shane Spatafore, the 17-year-old St. Clair Shores resident charged with stabbing his best friend, believes his client was drugged. David Pietroski told the Macomb Daily that his client doesn't remember stabbing the 17-year-old with a kitchen knife early Monday morning during a sleepover. Spatafore claims that when others started taking a "liquid" drug, he went to bed and was was drugged while sleeping. “My client remembers seeing a small, 1-inch tall vial in (the victim’s) hand that supposedly contained liquid acid or LSD, I guess it’s something new these kids are doing,” Pietroski told the Macomb Daily.
