Sharing their opposing views to The Patients' Rights Repeal Act, Sander Levin and Candice Miller argued their opinions on the controversial debate through public statements this week. Levin and Miller each represent Metro Detroit communities, including several that span throughout Macomb County. The House majority voted Thursday to repeal Obamacare—formally known as the Affordable Care Act. Many expect it will not pass in the Democratic-controlled Senate. Sander Levin, D-Royal Oak, released the following statement after President Obama’s State of the Union address: ”The President extended his hand to Republicans in Congress and called on us to ‘just do it’ in partnership and with urgency. He laid out a clear and decisive path on jobs and manufacturing, balanced deficit reduction and key new initiatives that Congress must now tackle, including immigration reform and gun violence. I am optimistic about the possibility for progress after his clarion call for action and his inspiring description of the role of each of us citizens in his conclusion.”

High school students in the 9th congressional district have until Jan. 25 to submit a 2-3 minute video expressing their vision for the country.
High school students in Rep. Sander Levin's 9th congressional district, which includes St. Clair Shores, are invited to write their own inaugural address this month in honor of President Barack Obama's second inauguration. The Student Inaugural Address Competition invites students to submit, via video, their own two-three minute inaugural address explaining their vision for the country's future. The submissions will be judged by a panel of local residents, while the winner will be announced during the week of Jan. 28. President Barack Obama will be officially sworn in for a second term, and give his second inaugural address, on Jan. 21. Students may submit their videos to Levin's website through Friday, Jan. 25. The U.S. House went along with a Senate plan Tuesday to address expiring Bush-era tax cuts while delaying spending cuts.
The U.S. House of Representatives voted 257-167 late Tuesday night to endorse a Senate vote on a bill that would avert the so-called "Fiscal Cliff." This bill extends the tax cuts passed during George W. Bush's presidency that would have expired on Jan. 1, and delays automatic spending cuts. A complete list of the yeas and nays can be found on the website for the House of Representatives. U.S. Rep. Sander Levin, D-Royal Oak, voted for the bill, which will extend curent tax rates for all wage earners making below $400,000 and couples making below $450,000. The League of Women Voters Oakland Area and Patch will co-sponsor a candidate forum for the 9th Congressional district on Tuesday, Oct. 9, at 7 p.m. at the Madison Heights City Hall. The forum will feature the two candidates for the U.S. House of Representatives, Democrat Sander Levin and Republican Don Volaric. The League of Women Voters also has invited Libertarian candidate Jim Fulner, U.S. Taxpayers candidate Les Townsend and Green Party candidate Julia Williams. Macomb County businessman Don Volaric will face U.S. Rep. Sander Levin in the general election to represent Michigan's 9th Congressional District in Washington.
Macomb County businessman Don Volaric won the Republican primary Tuesday in the 9th Congressional District Primary Tuesday to face incumbent Sander Levin. With 100 percent of Oakland and Macomb County precincts reporting, Volaric defeated Gregory Dildilian in the Republican primary and will face Levin in the general election, according to unofficial results. Levin, who was unopposed in the primary, has served in Congress since 1982. The candidates are running in the newly redrawn district which includes southern Macomb and Oakland counties.

A painting by Lakeview High School student Abby Lampron was selected to hang in the United States Capitol.
Lakeview High School student Abby Lampron recently received first place for her painting she did in her Kendall art class with Katie Schuur, according to Lakeview art teacher Keith Rayner. Lampron received the honor from U.S. Congressman Sander Levin during a reception at the Rust Belt Market in Ferndale. This summer Abby, will receive two tickets to Washington, DC, to attend the National Art Reception at the United States Capitol.
