Cancer survivors, their families, those who lost a loved one and their supporters took part in the American Cancer Society Relay for Life in St. Clair Shores. The 24-hour fundraiser stepped off at noon Friday in Blossom Heath Park.
Hundreds of walkers are taking part in the 14th American Cancer Society Relay for Life of St. Clair Shores in Blossom Heath Park. A record 58 teams comprised of walkers from all ages signed up and donated to the event, including Ardmore Elementary School which held a recess relay and raised $719 for the Relay for Life.

After months of training, fund raising and planning, the annual St. Clair Shores Relay for Life steps off at noon in Blossom Heath Park. Dozens of teams are collecting donations with a goal of nearly $157,000. Those participating in the Relay for Life conducted a number of unique fundraisers and reason for participating including: The walk begins at noon, and the entire event to raise funds to fight cancer. One dollar can make a big difference in today in St. Clair Shores. For $1, book lovers can select a book from a wide selection of donated books at the Book Fair at Jefferson Middle School. That $1 for a book not only allows individuals to learn something new, or travel to a far-off land, but the sale of each book goes to the Jefferson Relay for Life Team Patriots. The team is comprised of nearly 100 students. These students donate their time to hold a variety of fundraisers and participate in the Relay for Life in June. Kris Rice has battled cancer and now works tirelessly for others who have the disease.
A small itch ended up scratching the surface of a major life-changing event for Kris Rice. Rice, a married mother of two boys, had just had a mammogram a couple of months before she was diagnosed on June 2, 2006, with breast cancer at the age of 48. "It turned out to be stage 4," said Rice, who added that doctors determined she had been living with the lump in her breast for two and a half years. That diagnosis changed the course of her life, and many others. Her doctors did a lumpectomy, then a partial mastectomy and then a full mastectomy in addition to chemo and radiation.
