Patch Readers Raise $5,512 to Fight Hunger in Metro Detroit

Here's a look at the results from our Patch Fights Hunger virtual food drive.

More than 16,500 men, women and children in Metro Detroit will have a warm, healthy meal provided by Gleaners Community Food Bank this holiday season—and it's all thanks to Patch readers. Throughout the month of November, 30 Michigan Patch communities took part in the Patch Fights Hunger virtual food drive, raising funds for Gleaners. In the end, Patch readers raiesd $5,512. A total of $165 in donations came from St. Clair Shores. Gleaners distributes 100,000 meals each day to hungry people in southeast Michigan, and in the month of giving thanks, Patch partnered with the nonprofit to start the first-ever virtual food drive. Patch readers from across the region "shopped" Gleaners' virtual store and saw exactly what their donation would buy…

This Thanksgiving, Help Patch Fight Hunger in Michigan

We want to give more to Gleaners Community Food Bank this holiday season. Shop our virtual food drive by Nov. 25 to join the fight.

The season of giving isn't over yet—so why should our Patch Fights Hunger virtual food drive end so soon? As such, we've extended our drive supporting Gleaners Community Food Bank until Nov. 25. On Thanksgiving, a day when every American family gives thanks for the things in their life, most of us will enjoy a feast with our families. But there are still many people who don't have enough to eat—including one out of every four children. Gleaners distributes 100,000 meals each day to hungry people in southeast Michigan, and we want to help them with their goal by raising $10,000 through the Patch Fights Hunger online food drive. Ninety-four cents of every dollar you donate goes directly toward feeding hungry people in your own communities. …

Children Are Hungry in St. Clair Shores, And You Can Help

More than 300,000 children in southeast Michigan don't get enough to eat, negatively impacting health, learning and more.

In our land of plenty, hunger continues to be problem. One in four Michigan children lives in poverty, and that puts them at risk of not getting enough food. Gleaners actively works to eradicate hunger, targeting a five-county area— Livingston, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland and Wayne—in southeast Michigan. It provides 45 million pounds of food each year to Michigan’s hungry via its 600 partner food pantries, schools, soup kitchens, shelters and nonprofits. “Last year more than 317,000 children in southeast Michigan qualified for free or reduced fee lunches -- about 3,000 more than the year before…
