The Optimist Club of St. Clair Shores will host their 15th Champions Banquet to honor local champions May 8 at the Blossom Heath Inn.
The Optimist Club of St. Clair Shores will recognize six citizens who have made a positive impact on the community May 8 at the annual Champions Banquet at the Blossom Heath Inn. The Optimists define a champion as "someone who has talent, courage, and tenacity - a person who fights for or defends any person or cause," according to a release for the banquet which includes dinner, entertainment and an awards presentation to the Champions. Optimist Clubs from Macomb County and the Grosse Pointes will be holding a junior golf tournament May 18 at Cracklewood Golf Course.
Area Optimist Clubs in Macomb County and the Grosse Pointes are planning the 11th annual Junior Golf Tournament for Boys and Girls at the Cracklewood Golf Course in Macomb Township. The tournament for children between 10- and 18-years-old will be held May 18, and winners may advance in the statewide Michigan District Optimist Qualifying Tournament. In previous years, golfers including Bubba Dickerson, Tiger Woods, Davis Love III, Michelle McGann, Ernie Els, Justin Leonard and Nancy Lopez have participated in Optimist-sponsored events. The entry fee for players age 12 to 18 is $40 and includes 18 holes of golf, lunch and snacks on the course. Parades, decorations, acts of kindness and school celebrations are just some of the ways the holidays were celebrated in St. Clair Shores.
It's Christmas morning and across the city families are celebrating the day in a variety of way. But in the weeks leading up to the big day, residents, organizations, businesses and schools celebrated the season while spreading Christmas joy around the community. St. Clair Shores Fire Department Lt. James A. Nichols, age 45, died Dec. 15, 2012.
St. Clair Shores Fire Department Lt. James A. Nichols, who served in the U.S. Army and was described as a "loyal" member of the fire department, died Dec. 15, 2012. Lt. Nichols, 45, was a registered nurse and a 16-year veteran of the St. Clair Shores Fire Department where he was a paramedic and a member of the Macomb County Technical Rescue Team. He was honored recently during the Optimist Club of St. Clair Shores Firefighter recognition breakfast for being one of five firefighters from St. Clair Shores who are part of this team. "We are a safer Macomb County because of these firefighters," said Chief George Morehouse during the ceremony. Lt. It was a gala affair Wednesday at the Blossom Heath Inn as members of St. Clair Shores' philanthropic groups, schools officials, business and elected officials gathered for the annual Poinsettia Ball.
The St. Clair Shores community gathered Wednesday night for the Optimist Club of St. Clair Shores' Poinsettia Ball at Blossom Heath Inn. The annual ball brings together the various groups for one holiday party instead of having individual events. While the event is a chance for adults to celebrate, it was also an opportunity to benefit a good cause. Guests brought new, unwrapped toys for children who receive items from the St. Clair Shores Cops for Kids program.

Members of the Optimist Club of St. Clair Shores were joined by other volunteers to pack and deliver boxes of food to local families.
Members of the Optimist Club of St. Clair Shores, and other volunteers, assembled and delivered food boxes Sunday to 12 local families. The boxes were packed by 16 volunteers in the South Lake warehouse and include food for the families for a week. Items included milk, eggs, bread, spaghetti sauce and noodles, cereal, treats, pop, desserts, peanut butter and jelly, canned vegetables, juice, along with items to make a Thanksgiving turkey dinner with all the trimmings. “I am proud of this organization and the great things we continue to do for those less fortunate than ourselves," club President Debbie DePape said in a release. Members of the Optimist Club of St. Clair Shores recently celebrated their 20th anniversary, and are preparing to continue to serve the community this holiday season.
For more than two decades the members of the Optimist Club of St. Clair Shores have served the city, honored leaders in the community and provided meals, events and programs for children, families and organizations. After recently celebrating their 20th anniversary, members of the Optimists have a full slate of programs and events planned for this holiday season and beyond. "As the club has gotten older, we have added more projects," said Debbie DePape, president of the 42-member club. "It is a passion we all have - giving back."
