Nautical Coast Cleanup Seeks Volunteers

The 18th Nautical Coast Cleanup returns May 19 along Lake St. Clair.

The Nautical Coast Cleanup - one of the signs of spring in St. Clair Shores - returns May 19. During the 18 years of the all-volunteer event, more than 576 tons of debris has been removed from the shoreline of Lake St. Clair. This year organizers, which include The St. Clair Shores Waterfront Environmental Committee, We Are Here Foundation, Jefferson Yacht Club, St. Clair Shores Senior Activity Center and Advanced Aquatics Diving are targeting: Homeowners can also volunteer to clear the waterfront area in their subdivision "Volunteers are what made this event the success it has been in the past and it is the volunteers who will make this event a success again this year," Waterfront Environmental Committee Chairman Joe St. John wrote in an …

Volunteers Clean Lake St. Clair Coastline

Classes, church organizations and other volunteers joined the St. Clair Shores Waterfront Environmental Committee Sunday morning for the annual Nautical Coast Clean-up.

Volunteers descended on the Lake St. Clair coastline Sunday morning for the 17th Annual Nautical Coast Cleanup and Lake St. Clair Celebration. In the previous 16 years, the volunteers have collected more than 547 tons of debris from the Lake St. Clair shoreline.  "It's the kickoff for summer in St. Clair Shores," said Dave Rubello, a member of the St. Clair Shores Waterfront Environmental Committee. Joe St. John, chairperson of the St. Clair Shores Waterfront Environmental Committee, stated the event started as way to clean the beaches before the swimming season, and has grown to bring the community together.

Volunteers Needed to Clean the Shoreline

Four areas have been targeted to remove debris for the annual Nautical Coast Cleanup along Lake St. Clair.

Volunteers have removed tons of garbage and debris over the years from the shoreline of Lake St. Clair during the Nautical Coast Cleanup. But after a long winter, additional rubbish and sea debris has built up, and the St. Clair Shores Waterfront Environmental Committee needs volunteers for the cleanup this year.  "Volunteers are what made this event the success it has been in the past and it is the volunteers who will make this event a success again this year," Joe St. John, chairperson of the St. Clair Shores Waterfront Environmental Committee.  The 17th Annual Nautical Coast Cleanup and Lake St. Clair Celebration will be held May 20. Waterfront Committee Celebrates Environmental Efforts, Plans for 2012

The St. Clair Shores Waterfront Environmental Committee held their annual meeting Thursday to discuss issues affecting the lake, volunteer efforts and award scholarships.

A cross-section of concerned residents, business owners and elected officials filled City Council chambers in City Hall on Thursday to celebrate the accomplishments of the St. Clair Shores Waterfront Environmental Committee and plan for the coming year. Hundreds of volunteers—from school children to retirees—participated in a variety of projects in 2011 including removing trash from freeway entrances, recycling fishing line and stenciling storm drains. One of the largest events organized by the committee was the Nautical Coast Clean-up, which attracted an estimated 450 volunteers who removed 29.83 tons of trash and debris from beaches, parks and shoreline areas.
