St. Clair Shores Parks and Recreation, and the Senior Center of the Shores, has scheduled the annual Coney for Kids Dinner to benefit the Special Needs Program for May 2.
National Coney Island will close today in the Shores Shopping Center, and in early 2013, a new Sanders retail and clearance store will open in the plaza on Harper at 13 Mile.

National Coney Island, which was the chain's second restaurant, will close today after 43 years in the same location after the company and landlord could not agree on a new lease. Clothing retailer Fashion Bug is also in the process of a store closing sale. While two tenants are leaving, a new retailer recently opened. Play N Trade, a video game store, recently opened. National Coney Island employees served a constant stream of Coney Island hot dogs at the annual Coney for Kids fundraiser for the St. Clair Shores Parks and Recreation Special Needs Children's Playground Program.
A large cross-section of the community gathered Thursday at the Senior Activities Center for a coney dog fundraiser for the St. Clair Shores Parks and Recreation Special Needs Children's Playground Program. Families, elected and appointed officials, along with the staff and participants from the summer playground program, gathered to enjoy the dinner which is also one of the largest fundraisers of the year for the program. Volunteers from the Warren De La Salle basketball team, St. Clair Shores Lakers Unified Hockey Team and the Senior Center of the Shores Board helped serve food and tend tables throughout the night. Joe Grimm, co-author of "Coney Detroit," also attended the event to discuss his book and all-things coney.
