St. Clair Shores Mayor Kip Walby spoke Thursday at his first State of the City address at the Senior Center for Active Adults. Walby said the city put a considerable amount of money in the bank after it paid all of its bills, retirees and pension expenses earned by city employees, according to The Macomb Daily. Walby was elected as mayor in 2011 and served on city council for 12 years before that. He is also a member of one of St. Clair Shores' oldest families. St. Clair Shores anticipates a $1.2 million surplus for the 2011-2012 budget.
The city of St. Clair Shores had projected a shortfall in excess of $800,000 for the 2011-2012 budget, but is now anticipating a $1.2 million surplus. Mayor Kip Walby announced Monday that the city will not have to dip into the rainy day fund for more than $800,000 to balance the books for the budget year ended which ended June 30. "We are not short more than $800,000. We are going to take $1.2 million extra and put it in our rainy day fund," said Walby. "We try to be very conservative in what we do." Every month St. Clair Shores Mayor Kip Walby interviews a different elected official or department head within the city during his "Mayor's Corner" television show. This month his guest is a Grosse Pointe Woods resident who frequents the Dockside Cafe and had a front-row seat to one of the the greatest baseball seasons in the history of the Detroit Tigers. Pio DiSalvo, the retired Tigers trainer, sat down with the mayor—and later Patch —to talk baseball. The 73-year-old Pennsylvania native had a close relationship with players, coaches and future coaches of the Tigers from the 1970s through today.
