Anthony Wickersham Begins First Full Term as Macomb County Sheriff

Anthony Wickersham took office Jan. 1 and began his first full term as the Macomb County Sheriff.

The start of the new year marked the beginning of the latest chapter in the law enforcement career of Anthony Wickersham. Wickersham, 51, joined the Macomb County Sheriff's Department in 1986 as a correctional officer and has held every rank in the department including sheriff—a position he was appointed to in 2011. The 46th Macomb County Sheriff ran for re-election in November and defeated Steve Thomas to win a full, four-year term. "You really do appreciate what a candidate has to go through to get elected," said Wickersham, of his run for office which focused on his career in the department. "(Voters in Macomb County) believed I was a strong person to continue on as sheriff." The election of Wickersham also marked the first time in 36 …

Macomb County Sheriff: Outreach Needed for Heroin Prevention

Sheriff Anthony Wickersham says some heroin users in the county are as young as 13.

Heroin cases in Macomb County have changed--and are more numerous. According to Sheriff Anthony Wickersham, many people who had heroin overdoses 15 to 20 years ago were “people living on the streets that would shoot it up.” But that changed about seven years ago when heroin use started to rise in Macomb. “Now you’re going in homes with good family structures, good students, star athletes, and we’re losing a lot of young people there,” Wickersham said. To decrease heroin use in Macomb County, he said, arrested people need a good support system, so they don’t end up using again after they leave jail. “We’ve tried over the years to arrest our way out of this problem, and it really doesn’t happen,” he said. “We’ve got to try to get out there …

Local Law Enforcement to Continue Stepped Up Patrols Over Labor Day Weekend

The Michigan State Police, Macomb County Sheriff's Office and local law enforcement agencies will have increased drunk driving and seat belt enforcement patrols through the Labor Day weekend.

Local, county and state law enforcement agencies will be on patrol this weekend looking for drunk drivers and conducting safety belt enforcement zones. The effort is part of the on-going "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" crackdown funded through federal traffic safety funds and coordinated by the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning. "We are going to increase patrols and put deputies out there to help reduce the drunk driving on Macomb County roads," said Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham. "This isn't going to stop on Labor Day." This year, the crackdown focuses on drivers who consider themselves "professionals" and feel they were better drivers when drunk, according to law enforcement officials. Officers reported that drunk …
