Students at Lake Shore High School raised nearly $2,000 for children served by the Macomb County Rotating Emergency Shelter Team in a National Honor Society fundraiser.
The Lake Shore High School National Honor Society organized a homeroom competition this fall and raised nearly $2,000 for the Joy of a Toy program for the Macomb County Rotating Emergency Shelter Team. In just eight days the students raised the funds in the school-wide competition. "I was looking for $500," said Erika Welsh, Lake Shore social studies teacher and National Honor Society advisor, who was impressed with the efforts of the students. A number of students contributed a variety of amounts, including one who gave a $20 bill he received as a birthday gift. Shelby Township resident elected to MCREST Board of Directors.
Shelby Township resident Damon Sorenson was elected to fill a vacancy on the Macomb County Rotating Emergency Shelter Team (MCREST) Board of Directors. His term will expire in May 2012. MCREST works with 90 churches throughout Macomb County to act as homeless shelters year-round for men, women, and families as well as provide many services to help the homeless transition to independence. Sorenson, 50, is the Chief Financial Director of Mount Clemens Regional. He holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Moorhead State University and a master’s degree in business administration from Lake Superior State University. MCREST receives a grant from United Way for childcare equipment.
Area homeless children will be better accommodated at local churches, thanks to a $10,400 grant awarded to Macomb County Rotating Emergency Shelter Team, also known as MCREST. The United Way money is to pay for portable cribs, child beds, high chairs, booster seats, linens, pillows and other childcare equipment. MCREST loans the equipment to churches that volunteer to serve the homeless in Macomb County. “This grant will boost MCREST’s capabilities to care for the increasing number of families with children in the homeless population,” newly appointed MCREST Director Angela Willis, of Chesterfield Township, said in a prepared statement Monday. “We need these items because sometimes our volunteer churches cannot accommodate children but …
