Lakeview Selects New Boardmember

Lakeview's Board of Education recently selected James Kouri to fill a vacancy on the elected body.

Lakeview Public Schools Board of Education recently selected James Kouri to fill a vacancy on the elected body following the resignation Michael McCain. Kouri, a current high school parent who also has grandchildren in the district, was one of six applicants for the position. He will serve a partial term until December 31, 2014, until the next regular election process can occur.  Kouri took the oath of office at the regular Board of Education meeting on Feb. 19.

Lakeview Buys Former Wheat School, Adds Classrooms

Lakeview Public Schools Board of Education recently approved the purchase of the former Wheat School for additional elementary school classrooms, and administrative offices.

Lakeview Public Schools has announced the district will be purchasing the former Wheat School on Harper south of 11 Mile, currently known as the Wheat Office Center building, for additional elementary classrooms and new administrative offices. The Board of Education recently gave administration approval to purchase the building for $2.32 million to ease growing enrollment at the elementary level. The district administrative offices will be moving out of Princeton Elementary School in February or March of 2013 and into the new building. The administrative offices, and board of education meeting room, will then be renovated and returned to classroom uses for fall 2013. School Briefs: Lakeview Board Selects Officers, Middle School Hosts Fundraiser

Daniel Dombrowski was elected president of the Lakeview Board of Education at a recent meeting, and Jefferson Middle School will collect jeans for homeless to teens.

The oath of office was administered to re-elected board members Philip Thomas, Jr. and Michael McCain, along with newly elected member Michael Bayer. The board elected Daniel Dombrowski president, Philip Thomas, Jr., vice president Donald Wheaton, Jr., secretary and Timothy Houlihan, treasurer. Students collect jeans for homeless teens Students at Jefferson Middle School will be begin collecting jeans Tuesday for homeless teens. Lakeview Board Members Debate Contribution to Hockey Program

Extensive discussion precedes 4-3 vote to donate $3,000 to Lakers Unified Hockey Team

The hockey team shared by the city’s three school districts was once again the topic of discussion among members the Lakeview Board of Education. Lakeview's board members recently engaged in an extended debate over a proposed motion to contribute $3,000 to the Lakers Unified Hockey Team. The Lakers team was formed in 2003 and is comprised of players from Lake Shore, Lakeview and South Lake Schools. As the measure appeared to be headed for defeat, Trustee Donald Wheaton Jr. amended the motion by making it a donation to cover referee costs at home games. The motion passed 4-3, with Carol Herbon, Michael McCain and Michael Wenner casting dissenting votes. Board members raised various points of contention, several of which centered on the lack…

South Lake has the only contested board of education race on general election ballot. Three candidates are vying for two vacancies

South Lake Schools is the only district in the city this year with a contested race for seats on the board of education. On Nov. 8, voters will select two out of three candidates to fill four-year terms. The race includes incumbent Ellen Dunn and district residents Michael Damiani and Charlotte Rebelein. Lakeview Briefs: Former Board Member Dies and Write-in Candidate Files for Vacancy

Former board member Stanley Bittner passes away, and Michael Bayer files to run for vacancy on the board of education.

Longtime former board member dies The Lakeview Public Schools community has lost a prominent member. Stanley Bittner, who served on the Board of Education from 1971-1983 and 2001-2005, died Oct. 3. Most recently, Bittner was a write-in candidate for an open seat on the board. Lakeview Briefs: Special Olympians Honored and Personnel Director Retires

Special athletes compete in state tournament and William Putney says goodbye.

Board recognizes Special Olympians The Lakeview Board of Education recently recognized a group of student-athletes who competed in the 2011 State Special Olympics at Central Michigan University in Mt. Pleasant. Recognized students were Breanna Finnigan, Ryan Garrett, Tyler Schaening, Paul Skowronski and Phillip Suchy. Each athlete competed against other athletes of the same ability based on preliminary scores, age and gender. The board also recognized the Special Olympics coaches: Lori Zuteck, Kimberly Zuteck and Krista Schneider.
