Readers of St. Clair Shores Patch react to a proposal in the Michigan State House of Representatives that would eliminate the foreign language requirement for graduation.
Hoping to free up more options for students when it comes to high school electives, the House Education Committee approved two bills in Lansing on Tuesday that would eliminate the foreign language requirement for graduation. Currently the following languages are taught at high schools in St. Clair Shores: By eliminating the two-year foreign language requirement, the proposal hopes to give students not headed to college more vocational options in school, but the Michigan Department of Education opposes the bill, according to the Detroit News. Lake Shore senior Matt Romanowski received the Shorians' first Academics, Citizenship and Team (ACT) scholarship sponsored by Great Dane Heating & Air Conditioning.
Lake Shore senior football player Matt Romanowski is the first recipient of Shorians' Academics, Citizenship and Team award sponsored by Great Dane Heating & Air Conditioning in Clinton Township. Romanowski, who holds a 3.85 grade point average and will be attending Greensboro College next year, was honored Tuesday and received the $500 check from Great Dane owner Josh Bigelow. "The community has helped us so much, it is the least we could do give back to the community," said Bigelow, a Lake Shore parent himself. "For me to give back to the community, it just seemed like the right place to start." Lake Shore student Marcus Barnett has received the Michigan High School Athletic Association's Scholar-Athlete Award.
Lake Shore High School student Marcus Barnett has received the Michigan High School Athletic Association's Scholar-Athlete Award. Barnett will receive a $1,000 college scholarship from Farm Bureau Insurance. He was one of 32 scholarship recipients with a 3.5 or higher grade point average who have lettered in at least one sport. Barnett received his scholarship at the 2013 MHSAA Boys Basketball Finals at the Jack Breslin Student Events Center in East Lansing.

Lake Shore senior Sydney Morgan signed a letter of intent to play basketball with Rochester College.
When Sydney Morgan leaves the halls of Lake Shore High School, she will heading to Rochester College to study and play basketball. Morgan will be joining her older sister, Jordan, at the college in Rochester. She signed a letter of intent Wednesday to play basketball at Rochester College. "All the summers, the seasons and the practices have come to fruition and they get to realize her dream of moving on," Jim Roehm, Lake Shore girls basketball coach has seen her grow into a leader. "To see her come up as a timid freshman...growing into someone who can lead and cares about her teammates - those are fun things to see as a coach." Roehm added that in addition to be a leader among her teammates, she led her team in scoring also.

Supporters of the Lake Shore Quarterback Club Sunday sampled the taste of 25 restaurants in St. Clair Shores, and neighboring communities, for the annual Shorian Taste Fest.
Speciality pizzas, freshly made tacos and made-to-order waffle cones were just some of the dishes served by the 25 restaurants that participated in the Shorian Taste Fest Sunday at Barrister Gardens. A panel of judges selected the top dishes at the event. They selected: In addition to raising funds for the Lake Shore football team through admission, raffles and the auction of a Robert Griffin III Washington Redskins jersey, members of the Lake Shore Quaterback Club and the football team wore stickers with "E S" to honor volunteer Ed Siecinski, who died shortly after last year's Taste Fest.

The Shorian Taste Fest annually features a number of local restaurants sampling fare and auctions of unique items to benefit the Lake Shore football team. This year, through the generosity of former Virginia Gov. George Allen Jr., a signed jersey from Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III will be auctioned during the event. The son of Lake Shore High School alumnus, and Pro Football Hall of Fame member, George Allen returned to his father's hometown for a special "Hometown Hall of Famer" ceremony.
The Pro Football Hall of Fame came to Lake Shore High School in St. Clair Shores Tuesday to honor George Allen, a Shorian and Hall of Fame member. The ceremony was part of national Hometown Hall of Famers program sponsored by Allstate Insurance, which honors members of the Hall of Fame in their hometowns. Allen's son George Allen Jr., a former governor of Virginia, represented the family at ceremony in Lake Shore's gymnasium that was attended by students, local dignitaries and Thomas J. Wilson, president and chief executive officer of The Allstate Corporation and Allstate Insurance Company who is also a Lake Shore graduate. George Allen, the former U.S. Senator from Virginia and the son of the Pro Football Hall of Famer, will attend a ceremony honoring his father Tuesday at the high school in St. Clair Shores.
George Allen Jr. has never visited his father's hometown of St. Clair Shores, but the city where George Allen grew up and matriculated at Lake Shore High School was never far from his heart. Allen, the former U.S. Senator from Virginia, spoke with Patch and recalled that his father's mood would be determined by "how the Tigers were doing" and he would "always hear about" St. Clair Shores. It was also in St. Clair Shores that the elder Allen first showed his perseverance, commitment to excellence and work ethic. According to the Pro Football Hall of Fame website, Allen didn't miss a day of school while attending Lake Shore and lettered in football, basketball, and track before graduating in 1937. The St. Clair Shores community will gather from 1-5 p.m. March 24 at Barrister Gardens for the annual Shorian Taste Fest fundraiser for the Lake Shore Quarterback Club.
A list of some of the businesses and restaurants participating in the annual Shorian Taste Fest fundraiser for the Lake Shore Quarterback Club at Barrister Gardens has been released. Among the restaurants that will be offering samples of their dishes at the annual fundraiser include: Area business that are participating include: Proceeds from the event allow the quarterback club to purchase items including helmets, weight room equipment and video equipment. Lake Shore Shore Shorian JacQuan Moore lost Saturday in the Michigan High School Athletic Association State Wrestling Individual Finals.
Lake Shore Shorian JacQuan Moore advanced to the finals of the MHSAA State Wrestling Individual Finals, but lost to reigning state champion Zac Hall of St. Johns. Moore, who wrestled at 125 pounds, lost to Hall who has won three straight championships according to an article in the Detroit Free Press. Wrestlers from across the state, in a variety of weight classes, competed in the Michigan High School Athletic Association state wrestling finals this weekend at the Palace of Auburn Hills.
