Two men St. Clair Shores police believe are responsible for robbing an 85-year-old woman a parking lot were arrested Monday night after a multi-city pursuit spanning Grosse Pointe Shores to Grosse Pointe Park.
Grosse Pointe Shores, Park, Farms and City police officers assisted Monday night in a pursuit down Lake Shore Road that ended with the arrest of two men believed to be responsible for robbing an 85-year-old woman in the parking lot of a St. Clair Shores Kroger. The pursuit was not particularly fast but rather at a reasonable speed, Shores Det. Sgt. Scott Rohr said. The public safety risk was that the driver of the car repeatedly drove off the roadway onto lawns and sidewalks to avoid being caught by police, he said. It all started shortly before 7 p.m. when St. Clair Shores police issued a radio call to area departments alerting them to a robbery at the Kroger on 9 Mile and Greater Mack Avenue. The former handyman who admitted in December to killing Grosse Pointe Park resident Jane Bashara in January 2012 will serve 17 to 28 years in prison after being sentenced Tuesday morning in Wayne Circuit Court.
In approximately 15 minutes, Joe Gentz apologized for killing Jane Bashara, her sister asked that he be held accountable and Wayne Circuit Court Judge Vonda Evans sentenced him to 17 to 28 years in prison Tuesday. Gentz pleaded guilty in December to second-degree murder in the strangulation death of Jane Bashara. Originally he was charged with first degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder, carrying potential life in prison sentences. Evans highlighted the lack of thought by Gentz about whether it was wrong to kill Bashara. She followed plea agreement guidelines established by the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office and his defense attorney, Susan Reed. He will serve no less than 17 years and no more than 28 years. The sentencing for the man who admitted to strangling Jane Bashara to death has been re-scheduled for a second time--this time moving the sentencing up to Feb. 19 from a March date.
Wayne Circuit Court Judge Vonda Evans changed the sentencing hearing for Joe Gentz from early March to Feb. 19, according to the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office. Gentz, who pled guilty to second degree murder in the January 2012 strangulation death of Jane E. Bashara, will be sentenced at 9 a.m. Feb. 19. He was originally scheduled to go before Evans Jan. 29 then that was rescheduled to March 1. Wayne County Prosecutor's spokeswoman Maria Miller noted the change in the sentencing date in an email case update Thursday morning. Gentz remains in custody. Bob Bashara's sentencing hearing has been postponed from Tuesday, Nov. 20 to Dec. 10 at 8:30 a.m. On Oct. 11, Bashara, a Grosse Pointe Park resident, appeared before Judge Bruce U. Joe Gentz, the handyman charged with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder in the January strangulation death of Grosse Pointe Park's Jane E. Bashara, waived his right to a preliminary exam this morning, according to a report by Maria Miller, spokeswoman for the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office. In a short proceeding before 36th District Court Chief Judge Kenneth King, Gentz said he understood his rights and waived the preliminary examination. The judge heard arguments early Thursday in Third Circuit Court on a bond reduction request from Bob Bashara's attorney. Prosecutors oppose any change, saying his behavior since being in jail has continued to be of concern.
Bob Bashara will remain in custody pending the outcome of a brief hearing Thursday in Third Circuit Court in which his attorney requested a reduction in his $15 million cash-only bond to an amount he deems to be more reasonable. Judge Bruce Morrow will rule on the arguments heard Thursday by next Tuesday, Sept. 18, he said, declaring the brief hearing concluded after Bashara's attorney and prosecutors gave their reasons for and against a bond reduction. The preliminary exam for Joe Gentz, who is charged in the January strangulation death of Jane E. Bashara, has been adjourned at the request of his court-appointed attorney Susan Reed, according to the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office. Gentz had been scheduled to appear before the judge Monday afternoon in 36th District Court in Detroit for his preliminary exam—the hearing in which prosecutors introduce the evidence against the accused and the judge determines whether it's sufficient enough for the prosecutor to continue pursuing the case.
