The presidential candidate is in town for a private event hosted by Gov. Rick Snyder on Wednesday night.
A crowd of about 200 people gathered Wednesday afternoon outside the Troy Marriott hotel on Big Beaver Road to rally in protest of visiting Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney. Romney is in Troy for a private fundraiser hosted by Gov. Rick Snyder at the hotel. Protesters carried signs and waved at motorists along Big Beaver, many of whom were honking as they passed by. "We're here to support Barack Obama," said Jeff Klayo of Mt. Clemens, who attended the rally with two fellow UAW members. "He stands for the little guys... The working class." Liz Ratzloff of Ann Arbor attended the rally and wore the official "Pillamina" mascot costume for Planned Parenthood. "I'm here sporting Pillamina because Romney doesn't support low-cost …

Grosse Pointe North High School teacher Gary Abud is the recipient of double cornea transplants. He held a spinning fundraiser to support the Michigan Eye Bank this month.
Gary Abud is thankful for his vision. It's never something he takes for granted. At 10, he was diagnosed with a degenerative eye disease and as his vision repeatedly declined, he'd get use to it. Now, after two cornea transplants, Abud has perfect vision. He compares the transformation to "looking through a rain-covered windshield in a severe storm," to noticing the details of everyday life. His wife's smile, street signs, and more. In an effort to help support the Michigan Eye Bank--an organization dedicated to helping people like Abud regain their vision--he held a spinning fundraiser this month at Next Level Heath and Fitness. It was a perfect marriage for Abud, who regularly teaches spinning at the St. Clair Shores fitness center. A …

Fundraiser kicks off with volleyball game between senior girls and boys
A local child with a hair-loss condition will now receive a much-needed wig, thanks to the fundraising efforts of students at South Lake High School. Recently students spearheaded a fundraiser that generated approximately $1,000 for Wigs 4 Kids. Located in St. Clair Shores, Wigs 4 Kids is a non-profit organization that helps children and young adults experiencing hair loss by providing custom-fitted, age-appropriate wigs. The fundraiser was a spur-of-the-moment initiative that began right around the time of the school’s unique annual tradition: a volleyball powder puff game that pits senior boys against junior boys. South Lake science teacher Paul Voydanoff has been coordinating the volleyball powder puff game for 13 years. The idea of …

As a double cornea transplant recipient, Gary Abud has organized and is now recruiting for a Ride-A-Thon to benefit the Michigan Eye Bank.
One of Grosse Pointe North's science teachers bypassed a beach and sunny weather this week during spring break. Instead he used the break to organize and recruit people for his Ride-A-Thon charity event to benefit the Michigan Eye Bank. Gary Abud is a double cornea transplant recipient. Not only does he want to give back after receiving the gift of perfect vision twice but he also wants to educate people about the organ donor registry. The 26-year-old science teacher describes his pre-transplant vision as "looking through a rain-covered windshield in a severe storm." His post-transplant vision was overwhelming, he said. "My wife went in with me. Before I had the surgery, I could not see the details of her face," Abud said. "After I …
