Police agencies will have extra patrols on the road for New Year's Eve as part of a drunk driving crackdown.
Law enforcement officers from St. Clair Shores, and agencies across Macomb County and Michigan, will have extra patrols on the road as part of a crackdown on drunk drivers for New Year's Eve. Last year, 14 people were killed in traffic crashes, and five of those crashes involved alcohol, according to the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning. "The best way to start out the new year is by celebrating responsibly and designating a sober driver, taking a cab or spending the night," said OHSP Director Michael L. Prince, said in a release. Mary Jo Stafford, who was charged with driving drunk when she struck and severely injured a couple riding their motorcycle on Harper, took a plea deal in the case Monday in Macomb Circuit Court.
A 54-year-old St. Clair Shores woman plead no contest in Macomb Circuit Court on Monday to charges of operating while intoxicated causing injury for striking a couple as they rode their motorcycle on Harper. Sandra Jo Stafford appeared before Macomb Circuit Court Judge Edward Servitto Jr., where she took a plea deal to broad siding Kevin and Heather Bruisnma on Aug. 22 as they drove on Harper. The couple, who are both wheelchair-bound due to their injuries, did not attend the proceedings. Stafford is free on bond and could face up to five years in prison when she is sentenced Nov. 28. The Michigan State Police, Macomb County Sheriff's Office and local law enforcement agencies will have increased drunk driving and seat belt enforcement patrols through the Labor Day weekend.
Local, county and state law enforcement agencies will be on patrol this weekend looking for drunk drivers and conducting safety belt enforcement zones. The effort is part of the on-going "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" crackdown funded through federal traffic safety funds and coordinated by the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning. "We are going to increase patrols and put deputies out there to help reduce the drunk driving on Macomb County roads," said Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham. "This isn't going to stop on Labor Day." A 23-year-old Pontiac man was sentenced to 90 days in jail for a drunken driving accident on Labor Day that caused two people to be thrown from the vehicle he struck.
A 23-year-old Pontiac man was sentenced to 90 days in the Macomb County Jail for driving drunk and causing a serious accident that threw two people from the vehicle he struck. Clifford Linke stood mute during his sentencing Friday before 40th District Court Judge Joseph Oster for the accident at 10 Mile and Harper about 2:30 a.m. on Labor Day. "The facts in this situation are horrific," Oster said during sentencing. "You were drunk at a high level, .24, got into an accident and two people were ejected from a vehicle." Linke had earlier plead guilty to operating while intoxicated and causing the accident and was sentenced to 90 days in the Macomb County Jail, two years probation, 100 hours of community service and $1,400 in fines and costs…
