Parenting Date Night

Child rearing is hard work. Be sure to take a break and spend some time fostering the other relationships in your life.

When is the last time you and your significant other enjoyed a date night without children? As parents we frequently are consumed with our children’s needs, wants, and desires. Our own identities and the ability to maintain our personal relationships often times can take a back seat to child rearing. Now I’m not suggesting a fancy date night where you leave the kids with a sitter until the wee hours of the night. Although I do recommend an occasional 24 hours without your children which is like a mini-vacation and undoubtedly will energize your parenting spirit.   My husband and I recommend trying out some of these for a night out in the Shores: Okay, so finding a good sitter is hard work and money is tight - after all everyone is feeling …

Creating Picnic Memories for a Lifetime

As parents we create memories everyday for our children. It is the little things they will remember most as they grow; playing at park and picnics.

As parents we are creating memories for our children in everything we do from monumental experiences to the every day occurrences of life. Undoubtedly, they will remember something as they grow older. What do we want our children to remember? What experiences do you remember as a child, were they good or bad? One of my fondest memories as a child was going to the local park by our house and having a picnic. I loved eating the little cheese squares and pickles on a blanket under the tree. Now today I am enjoying creating those same picnic memories with my children, a sometimes overlooked free family activity. And the best part is a picnic can be as simple or as complicated as you make it! Living in the St. Clair Shores we are blessed with …

I couldn't agree more! In fact not only can I remember the little cheese squares and sitting on the blanket BUT I can actually remember sitting under this weepy little tree and planning what swing or slide we were going to go on next. I love you sis!! Great article and thanks even more for reminding me what is really important about life..... our family and the simple moments we share together!   more ›

Bites Nearby: Shores Inn

This week St. Clair Shores Patch takes us to Shores Inn, a neighborhood bar serving good food, too.

Shores Inn is a St. Clair Shores institution. The building has been around since the turn of the century, and Shores Inn has been around for decades. Open for lunch until 2 a.m. every day of the week, there is more to this bar than drinks. The food has always been a important component of the business. From 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. every day of the week, happy hour specials are offered: $1 off drinks, and buy 1, get 1 free appetizers (with the purchase of two drinks).    Appetizers are enough to share. Spinach and artichoke dip is creamy, cheesy and garlicky. It comes to the table piping hot and is served with a heap of tortilla chips for dipping.  If Mexican is more your speed, the nachos are piled high with plenty of cheese, tomatoes, onions and…

Cooking Time Can Be Fun Time

It's 3:15 p.m., school is out and the kids are starving, there is homework to be done, after-school activities awaiting our arrival, and the everyday mom quickly puts on the supermom hat earning her wings for the day! Sound familiar?

Afternoon schedule: 3 p.m. rush to pick the kids up from school, 3:15 p.m. school's out, 3:30 p.m. unpack from school, 3:45 p.m. kids eat a snack and relax for a few minutes! 4 p.m. Mom preps dinner (is the chicken completely thawed?) and the kids work on homework, squabble with siblings and proceed to snack his/her way up to dinner. 5 p.m. Set table, eat dinner, clean up! 5:30-6 p.m. Run out the door to early evening activities or sit back and wonder, "What in the world just happened?" Before, during and after dinner in the average American home can be complete and utter chaos. However, we wouldn't change it for the world! The car ride home from school can lead to many enlightening conversations. A family dinner around the table is …

Bites Nearby: Dockside Cafe

For this week's feature, we visit Dockside Cafe. Located next to the St. Clair Shores Library, this spot is serving house-made breakfast, soups and sandwiches.

Bored with the same old dining out destinations you've been going to for years? Hungering for a new fabulous food experience?  Each week, St. Clair Shores editors and readers will pick a great restaurant either in town or nearby whose cuisine is considered to reign supreme. Here's this week's choice:  Dockside Cafe  Overview:  Feed your body, feed your mind, feed your soul at Dockside Cafe. This mom-and-pop cafe (body) sits right next to the library (mind) and has a wonderous view of the lake (soul).  Chef and owner Louie Economopoulos is making hearty, satisfying cuisine at affordable prices.  Coffee: Beans are roasted in Michigan by Schuil Coffee out of Grand Rapids. The Dockside Cafe blend is slightly sweet, smooth and has very little …

Travis Coffee Shop: Late Night Grubbin'

For close to 45 years, Travis Coffee Shop has been serving up hamburgers and more to the St. Clair Shores community.

It is rare that I explicitly mention the time I am at a restaurant. Food usually tastes the same whether eaten at noon or at 8 in the evening, but there are occasions where timing matters. It is 12:20 a.m. I am writing this at Travis Coffee Shop. Mind you it has snowed about 5 inches tonight. I'm here for a specific purpose, but the other eight guys (and they are all men aside from the waitress) are regulars. The waitress knows their orders. She calls each of them “hon” or “sweetie.”  Such is the charm of Travis.  Travis Coffee Shop has been a St. Clair Shores institution for close to 45 years. It should be noted that St. Clair Shores has two, 24-7 diners a mile away from each other–Travis and Linda's Place. Years ago, there were three 24-…

Yeah, so I go into Travis hamburgers to order a 6 pack of cheeseburgers. This woman with some kind of disgusting white substance on her hands (looks like the stuff people use for cold sores) takes my order (attitude) and the cook begins to cook my food. Then he got a personal phone call on a cell phone and the waitress takes over without washing her hands. Then she loads the burgers down with …   more ›
