Grosse Pointe Shores to Park Pursuit Ends in Double Arrest

Two men St. Clair Shores police believe are responsible for robbing an 85-year-old woman a parking lot were arrested Monday night after a multi-city pursuit spanning Grosse Pointe Shores to Grosse Pointe Park.

Grosse Pointe Shores, Park, Farms and City police officers assisted Monday night in a pursuit down Lake Shore Road that ended with the arrest of two men believed to be responsible for robbing an 85-year-old woman in the parking lot of a St. Clair Shores Kroger. The pursuit was not particularly fast but rather at a reasonable speed, Shores Det. Sgt. Scott Rohr said. The public safety risk was that the driver of the car repeatedly drove off the roadway onto lawns and sidewalks to avoid being caught by police, he said. It all started shortly before 7 p.m. when St. Clair Shores police issued a radio call to area departments alerting them to a robbery at the Kroger on 9 Mile and Greater Mack Avenue. St. Clair Shores police shared information …

Gentz to Serve 17 to 28 years in Prison in Bashara Homicide

The former handyman who admitted in December to killing Grosse Pointe Park resident Jane Bashara in January 2012 will serve 17 to 28 years in prison after being sentenced Tuesday morning in Wayne Circuit Court.

In approximately 15 minutes, Joe Gentz apologized for killing Jane Bashara, her sister asked that he be held accountable and Wayne Circuit Court Judge Vonda Evans sentenced him to 17 to 28 years in prison Tuesday.  Gentz pleaded guilty in December to second-degree murder in the strangulation death of Jane Bashara. Originally he was charged with first degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder, carrying potential life in prison sentences.  Evans highlighted the lack of thought by Gentz about whether it was wrong to kill Bashara. She followed plea agreement guidelines established by the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office and his defense attorney, Susan Reed. He will serve no less than 17 years and no more than 28 years.  Gentz underwent two…

Judge: Bashara's Attorney Must Remain on Case

Despite being a mutual motion by David Griem and Bob Bashara, a 36th District Court judge ruled Thursday that Griem must remain on the case and the preliminary exam for next week must go on. Griem was ordered to help any new attorney hired in the case.

Less than a week before his preliminary exam in 36th District Court, Bob Bashara's attorney David Griem sought to be relieved of the case due to a change in the pair's relationship. Bashara is accused of trying to hire a hitman to kill Joe Gentz, a handyman who is facing charges of murder and conspiracy to commit murder of Jane Bashara, Bob Bashara's wife. Both Bob Bashara and Joe Gentz are being held at separate Wayne County lockup facilities. Gentz was most recently found competent to stand trial after undergoing two evaluations.  Bob Bashara agrees with his attorney's motion, according to Local 4 WDIV, which reported that Bashara is scheduled to interview new potential attorneys today and Friday.  Griem's motion was filed Wednesday and …

$15M Cash-Only Bond Set for Bob Bashara

Bob Bashara appeared in 36th District Court via video-conference Wednesday for his arraignment for soliciting someone to kill Joe Gentz. He will appear in court again July 24.

Joe Gentz may not have been the only target of Bob Bashara's attempt to contract to kill, according to information presented by Wayne County Deputy Prosecutor Lisa Lindsey Wednesday in 36th District Court. Bob Bashara entered a plea of not guilty during his arraignment, where he appeared via video-conference for a single count of solicitation for murder against Joe Gentz--the man charged with first degree murder in Bashara's wife's death. Jane Bashara, who was strangled to death in January, would have turned 57 Friday. Lindsey argued for a $25 million cash-only bond before Magistrate Charles W. Anderson III, providing a litany of information about the case, including that Rachel Gillett and another unnamed witness may have also been …

Grosse Pointe Park Public Safety Director David Hiller confirmed the arrest to Patch on Monday but declined to release more details.  Media is swarming the Grosse Pointe Park municipal building following Bashara's arrest. This whole business of murder just reinforces my opinion about how ignorant people can be. In todays world one has to be absolutely nuts beyond any reason to commit or solicit this act. Thirty year old cold cases are being solved and yet someone always feels they can get away with it.   more ›

Grosse Pointe Woods Police Subdue Naked Man with Taser on Mack Avenue

A Grosse Pointe Woods public safety officer had to subdue a 29-year-old Livonia man who stripped himself of his clothing on Mack Avenue on Monday.

A 29-year-old Livonia man subdued by Taser on Monday by a Grosse Pointe Woods public safety officer blames his erratic behavior of stripping himself of his clothing and darting in and out of traffic on his usage of methamphetamine, which caused him to have an uncomfortable high in which he was "paranoid and out of his mind." The officer employed the Taser only after not being able to stop the man from darting in and out of traffic and other officers arrived to attempt to subdue him. The man flagged down an officer and began running in and out of traffic, eventually taking off his clothing and continuing to run in and out of traffic naked, according to a report. The man's actions were noticed by many passing motorists and neighboring …

Chad, I couldn't agree more with why he was NOT charged. Again, unbelievable! But that is NOT the Officers fault. Ultimately, It is not there decision to press charges. Joe Gentz made his first appearance in 36th District Court Monday afternoon via video-conferencing. Gentz had worked for Jane Bashara's husband, Bob Bashara, who owns a variety of residential and commercial properties. Gentz had done some handyman work for Bob Bashara and the two came to know each other late last year, Bob Bashara's attorney David Griem has told the media. Update: State, Park Police Leave Bashara Home

Grosse Pointe Park and Michigan State police left the Bashara home shortly after 2 p.m. Wednesday after loading up the back of an unmarked silver minivan. Meanwhile, the man freed Friday from custody was spotted running into Park police department moments

Seven investigators spent about three hours in the home of Bob Bashara Wednesday reportedly gathering evidence on a search warrant. Bashara has been named a "person of interest" in the strangulation death of his wife, Jane E. Bashara, whose body was found last month in her SUV behind a vacant house in Detroit. Among the investigators at the Bashara home Wednesday were a Grosse Pointe Park detective, a Grosse Pointe Park patrol officer and at least one man and one woman wore gear marked with the Michigan State Police emblem. Two other men and a woman wearing casual clothing were also inside, believed to be investigators. One of those men left the house about 15 minutes before the larger group and another man left about 20 minutes after the …
