Two Rescued on Lake St. Clair by Coast Guard

The U.S. Coast Guard rescued two people Sunday from a canoe adrift in Lake St. Clair.

U.S. Coast Guard personnel from Air Station Detroit and Station St. Clair Shores were dispatched to rescue two people Sunday in Lake St. Clair. The Macomb County Sheriff's Office notified the U.S. Coast Guard just after 9 a.m. Sunday that a canoe carrying two people were adrift in Lake St. Clair, according to a release. According to officials, the individuals spoke Chinese and little English. They also reported they could see land but could not reach it as they were being pushed offshore due to strong winds.  Using coordinates from one of the boater's cell phone transmissions, an aircrew from Air Station Detroit and boatcrew from Station St. Clair Shores were deployed to locate the boaters. Coast Guard Rescues Two People From Lake St. Clair

The U.S. Coast Guard rescued two people in Lake St. Clair Thursday after they were thrown from their personal watercraft.

Two people were rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard Thursday after they were thrown into Lake St. Clair when their personal watercraft ran aground in the Middle Channel. Crewmembers on a TowBoat U.S. boat notified a radio watchstander at Coast Guard Station St. Clair Shores that they had the two individuals, whose names and hometowns were not released, aboard the vessel and they needed medical attention. The Coast Guard launched a rescue boat and transferred the people, who were wearing life jackets when they fell in the water, to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources boat ramp in the Clinton River for medical attention. Coast Guard Assists Boaters on Lake St. Clair

The U.S. Coast Guard assisted boaters Sunday who became stranded on Lake St. Clair after their battery died.

The U.S. Coast Guard assisted two boaters who were stranded on Lake St. Clair Sunday night after their boat battery died. The Coast Guard reported that that a search-and-rescue watchstander at Coast Guard Sector Detroit received a report of a flare sighting in the vicinity of Gaukler Shoals, which is east of 10 Mile in Lake St. Clair. Another boater contacted the Coast Guard via VHF-FM marine radio after seeing the flare about 6:45 p.m., and stayed in contact with personnel during the rescue. About 10 minutes after receiving the call, personnel form Coast Guard Station St. Clair Shores arrived on the scene. The disabled vessel was towed to Jefferson Beach Marina. Coast Guard Rescues Nine Boaters in Lake St. Clair

U.S. Coast Guard personnel, along with good Samaritans on the water, rescued nine boaters Saturday from Lake St. Clair.

Nine people who were on a disabled boat in Lake St. Clair late Saturday morning are safely on land after being rescued by the personnel from U.S. Coast Guard Station St. Clair Shores. A watchstander at Coast Guard Station St. Clair Shores received a call at 11:43 a.m. of a disabled boat near the Middle Channel of Lake St. Clair and a rescue boatcrew was dispatched to respond to the call. Prior to the arrival of Coast Guard personnel, TowBoat U.S. and another boater, helped the boaters whose boat was taking on water, according to a release. The nine people aboard the boat were transferred to the Coast Guard vessel, and taken to the Clinton River Boat Ramp. Coast Guard Rescues Boaters on Lake St. Clair

Four people were rescued Sunday from a boat in Lake St. Clair that was taking on water.

Four people were rescued Sunday afternoon by the U.S. Coast Guard from a recreational boat taking on water in Lake St. Clair about a half-mile east of 11 Mile in St. Clair Shores. The operator of the boat used a cell phone to call 911 about 12:30 p.m., reporting engine failure caused waves to overcome the vessel and submerge the boat's stern, according to a Coast Guard release. Within 10 minutes a boatcrew from Coast Guard Station St. Clair Shores arrived on the scene. All four people from the boat were brought aboard the Coast Guard vessel. According to the release, one of the boaters showed signs of mild hypothermia but declined medical treatment. No other injuries were reported. In Lake St. Clair and around the world, the U.S. Coast Guard provides a number of missions, including border safety and assisting boaters.

The men and women who serve on Lake St. Clair in the U.S. Coast Guard are tasked with a number of missions throughout the year, including assisting boaters, protecting the border and rescuing anglers on ice floes. On a daily basis they can be found on the water and in the air serving the country, and today they celebrate the Coast Guard's 221st birthday. Throughout the Great Lakes there are 6,000 active-duty, reserve, auxiliary and civilian members of the 9th Coast Guard District’s 75 units, and there is a large presence on Lake St. Clair–one of the busiest waterways in the country. Coast Guard Rescues Boaters in Lake St. Clair

Personnel from Macomb County Coast Guard stations responded to two calls on Lake St. Clair.

Nearly 20 people had to be rescued or assisted this past weekend, including five in Lake St. Clair, the Coast Guard reported. Three people were rescued Friday evening by a boat crew from Coast Guard Station St. Clair Shores after their 16-foot boat was taking on water in the Middle Channel near Gull Island. The three people, who were all wearing life jackets, were transported to shore. Early Saturday morning, a Coast Guard aircrew aboard an MH-65 Dolphin rescue helicopter from Air Station Detroit, at Selfridge Air National Guard Base, airlifted two people off a grounded vessel in Lake St. Clair near Strawberry Island.
