Father's Day is Sunday, and if families in St. Clair Shores are looking for something unique, Patch has you covered. If dad likes to grill, Circare has unique spatulas and skewers for the afternoon barbecue. For the Michigan State University or University of Michigan graduate or fan, there are spatulas with the school logo for $27. Circare has special dad and grandad spatulas for $22. The Nov. 26 promotion features $25 incentive from American Express to 'shop small.'
American Express is urging people to "shop small" and support local businesses on one of the busiest shopping weekends of the year. "We’re asking millions of Americans to 'shop small' at their favorite local stores and help fuel the economy," American Express explains online. "When we all shop small, it will be huge." The firm puts money where its promotion is by offering a one-time $25 rebate to shoppers spending at least $25 at a small business after registering their credit card here. Any non-franchised locally owned shop qualifies if it accepts American Express. Resident Sasha Murphy has organized the inaugural Shop the Shores event this Saturday.
Sasha Murphy is a proud supporter of local businesses, but it wasn't until she heard a member of City Council speak about an initiative to shop locally that she was inspired to create a shopping version of a pub crawl. When Councilman Peter Rubino discussed the 3/50 project—where consumers pick three local businesses and spend $50—during a council meeting, she was inspired. "I do shop local, but how can I get more people to shop local?" was a question she posed to herself. Borrowing an idea she had seen in other communities, Murphy began meeting with local businesses to organize what became Shop the Shores crawl.
