South Lake, China Begin Exchange Program

Students from China arrived Monday for their first day of a two-week exchange program with South Lake Middle School.

Students from Xian Gaoxin Greenwich School were in the air nearly 30-hours for their flight from China to Detroit, but looked no worse for the wear Monday morning as they met their peers at South Lake Middle School. The 21 students, and two teachers, landed ealry Monday morning at Detroit Metropolitan Airport and were transported to St. Clair Shores for a welcome breakfast to kick off the two week exchange program. "They are coming to experience life in St. Clair Shores and South Lake," said Fang MacCallumMhor, South Lake Middle School Mandarin teacher. The students from China will stay with host families during their stay, and attend classes at the middle school. Their families, and the district, will also take the students on field trips…

Lake Shore Opens Taylor International School and Dorms

Officials from Lake Shore Public Schools and Haidian Shi Yan in Beijing joined with the community Tuesday to celebrate the new International School and Dormitory at Taylor.

School officials from Lake Shore Public Schools and Haidian Shi Yan in Beijing celebrated the opening of a unique facility for Chinese students participating in the district's successful exchange program. Nearly 100 students from China are living, studying and experiencing American culture in the secure dormitory built in a renovated 1950s-era school building. The students who come from China, stay in the renovated classrooms and pay Lake Shore to stay in these dorms. Additionally, the students utilize classrooms in the school for additional classes take in the late afternoon and on weekends.
