Bob Trembley of Chesterfield Township gives tips on watching upcoming meteor showers, including the Taurids this weekend.
Snow showers may be around the corner this year, but a more celestial downpour is sure to pique space observers' fancy. Meteor showers, including the Taurids this weekend, will be visible this month. The best place to see them is away from town centers, where light pollution obstructs clear viewing. Ideal time frames for watching are "always midnight and even better around 3 a.m. because of earth’s rotation, and how the earth travels through the particle stream that causes the meteor shower," according to Chesterfield Township amateur astronomer Bob Trembley. Several candidates debated Thursday night at Chesterfield Municipal Offices.
More than a month before Macomb County voters cast votes, candidates in several races debated Thursday evening in Chesterfield Township. In a series of taped segments in municipal offices, candidates spoke of their accomplishments and their goals if elected in November. The Anchor Bay Chamber of Commerce and The Voice newspaper sponsored the event moderated by Brian Powers. Incumbent Eric Smith, a Democrat who was elected in 2004 and re-elected in 2008, stressed his accomplishments in office during the debate with Republican challenger Michael Wrathell. About 100 motorcyclists gathered Monday in Chesterfield Township before the return of U.S. Staff Sgt. Matthew Leach to Michigan.
When U.S. Staff Sgt. Matthew Leach's body returned home Monday, an assembly of motorcycles were there. "Once the soldier touches down, we'll never leave him," said Michigan Patriot Guard Capt. Rich (Sniper) Bielat of Chesterfield Township. Bielat was among approximately 100 other motorcyclists, many military veterans, who lined up Monday morning along Marketplace Boulevard near Hall Road in the township. From there, Chesterfield police and the Patriot Guard drove to Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Harrison Township in support of Leach's service to his country. Patriot Guard Riders will gather Monday morning in Chesterfield Township to stand in honor of the sacrifice Staff Sgt. Matthew Leach made for our country.
U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Matthew Leach's body returns home to Michigan this morning. Patriot Guard Riders are to stand guard in honor of Leach's sacrifices to our country. Staging begins at 9:30 a.m. on Marketplace Boulevard near Hall Road in Chesterfield Township. A briefing is to begin at 10 a.m. and then departure for Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Harrison Township, where arrival honors will be held soon after. There will be a motorcycle escort to Wujek-Calcaterra Funeral Home in Sterling Heights. Leach, a 29-year-old Ferndale resident, husband and father of an infant son, died June 26 while serving in Kandahar Afghanistan.
