The owners of Charlie's Restaurant received approval Tuesday from the St. Clair Shores Planning Commission to expand their parking lot to ease parking congestion along California Street. Bob and Mariana Markaj requested and received approval to rezone the property behind the restaurant from the Planning Commission to expand their parking lot. A site plan was also approved for a 23-space lot to alleviate parking in front of homes on California. "I think this is the best solution for all of us," said Mariana Markaj. The owners of Charlie's Restaurant are considering the expansion of its lot to alleviate street parking on California. A request to rezone property for the expansion died for lack of support Tuesday at during the Planning Commission meeting.
The owner of the popular Charlie's Restaurant is considering the expansion of the parking lot of the business to alleviate parking along California Street in St. Clair Shores. Owner Bob Markaj requested the rezoning of property behind his Harper Avenue restaurant to allow him to purchase an existing house, raze it and expand the current lot to include 23 additional spaces. "The main (reason) is to relieve California street from the traffic," Markaj said. "The restaurant is very busy with customers and employees parking there." The request to rezone the property was to be considered by St. Clair Shores City Council on Monday, but was removed from the agenda after the planning commission failed to get a majority vote on the issues last week…

The family eatery in St. Clair Shores boasts an extensive menu, experienced staff, and an owner determined to make diners leave happy and satisfied.
Opening any business is a gamble, but when it succeeds, that makes it all the more satisfying. Charlie’s restaurant on Harper is approaching its one-year anniversary, on June 16, to be exact. Occupying the site of what most recently was Izzy’s -- remember the pig on the roof? -- owner Bob Markaj is determined to bring a nice family restaurant to a nice family neighborhood. The interior is all renovated, with airy ceilings, skylights, red stained-glass accents, decor in muted browns and deep crimsons, and small lanterns floating above every booth. In back there’s room for a party to reserve a spot, perfect for a club meeting or a birthday luncheon. A counter up front lets diners perch on a stool and enjoy a cup of coffee and a quick bite as…

St. Clair Shores' newest restaurant is a family style diner focused on made from scratch cuisine.
Sometimes there's no need to change what has worked forever. In most instances, family dining restaurants are not going to transform the culinary landscape. Charlie's Family Restaurant is about as straight forward as you can get. Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days a week, the menu is typical diner/Coney Island fare. Breakfast options are plentiful with omelettes, waffles, pancakes and even crepes gracing the menu. Charlie's Skillet has bacon, sausage, ham, onions, green pepper, mushrooms and tomatoes piled on potatoes covered in cheese and topped with three eggs. Not for tiny appetites but perfect for a hungry dude, at $7.59 it's a great deal for all of that food. Not in the mood for breakfast? Charlie's has an expansive …
