Christmas is the season of giving, and Patch wants to know what charity or group you are giving to this year. The American Red Cross released a poll in November in which most Americans said that they will continue to donate to charity this holiday season. In fact, most people said that their giving to political causes and Hurricane Sandy relief efforts will not reduce their year-end gifts to charity. The Red Cross poll also said that friends play a large role in charitable giving. Half of all donors (51 percent) said they would donate if a friend talked to them personally about a charity. So now Patch is asking you: What charities do you plan to help this Christmas? Will you donate to the Salvation Army or Toys for Tots? Will you volunteer…

Fundraiser kicks off with volleyball game between senior girls and boys
A local child with a hair-loss condition will now receive a much-needed wig, thanks to the fundraising efforts of students at South Lake High School. Recently students spearheaded a fundraiser that generated approximately $1,000 for Wigs 4 Kids. Located in St. Clair Shores, Wigs 4 Kids is a non-profit organization that helps children and young adults experiencing hair loss by providing custom-fitted, age-appropriate wigs. The fundraiser was a spur-of-the-moment initiative that began right around the time of the school’s unique annual tradition: a volleyball powder puff game that pits senior boys against junior boys. My favorite for the last 35 years has been the Old Newsboys Goodfellow Fund of Detroit, a 98-year old 501(C)(3) charity that this year hopes to raise $1.2 million to provide 32,000 Christmas packages stuffed with warm clothing, hats, gloves, toys, dolls, books, candy and a host of other gifts for kids aged 5-13 in Detroit, Harper Woods, Highland Park and River Rouge.
