The Lac Saint Clair Little League opened play Saturday at Kyte Monroe Park.
After a long winter, and a wet spring, teams from the Lac Saint Clair Little League took to the field Saturday at Kyte Monroe Park for the first game of the season. Teams from all age groups opened the season under sunny skies - with families watching - hitting, pitching, fielding and reuniting with friends and families. Opening Day is a holiday for Detroit Tigers fans in St. Clair Shores. Fans gathered at Fishbone’s in St. Clair Shores before the Tigers’ home-opener against the New York Yankees on Friday at Comerica Park. Sieglinde Lico, Kelly Brandon, Pat Cavacece and Uri Stephens all were enjoying pre-game festivities at Fishbone’s before boarding the bus headed to downtown Detroit for the game. Three St. Clair Shores residents were part of the boys baseball team from De La Salle which lost Saturday in the state championship game.
Three St. Clair Shores residents were part of the De La Salle boys baseball team which started the season 2-14, but turned around their fortunes to compete for the state championship. Senior Bill Radatz, a right-handed pitcher, juniors David Crudder and Sean Boyle, all residents of St. Clair Shores, were part of the team which lost 9-6 Saturday to Hudsonville in the Division 1 championship game in Battle Creek. Radatz, a right-handed pitcher, Crudder, a pitcher and plays first base, and Boyle, an infielder, helped the Pilots earn their first appearance in the championship game since 2009, when De La Salle captured the state title. Winning pitcher Alex Galant threw a three-hitter to lead the Lakeview baseball team to a 5-3 victory over Fraser on Wednesday. Galant struck out five and allowed only one earned run as Lakeview improved its overall record to 14-15. Nick White doubled, drove in a run and scored another for the Huskies. Nino Genna drove in two runs, and David Morris went 1-for-2 and scored a run for Lakeview. The Lakeview baseball team lost to Eisnehower 1-0 on Monday despite a strong effort from starting pitcher Mark Powell. Powell allowed only one run on four hits and five walks. He struck out three. Nick White went 1-for-2 with a walk, and Nino Genna went 1-for-3 for Lakeview. The Huskies have a 13-15 overall record. Mark Powell threw a one-hitter to lead the Lakeview baseball team to a 9-0 victory over Sterling Heights on Wednesday. Powell pitched all seven innings and struck out nine while only giving up two walks and one hit. He received plenty of support from Lakeview’s offense. Nino Genna went 2-for-4 with a RBI and run scored, and Sam Sells and David Morris each drove in two runs for the Huskies. Lakeview improved its overall record to 10-11. Coaches from the Detroit Tigers will hold a clinic Saturday for children who are playing for Lac Saint Clair Little League at Kyte Monroe Park.
Members of the Detroit Tigers coaching staff will give young ball players in the Lac Saint Clair Little League some tips on how to play the game Saturday just hours before the start of the season. "(The Tigers) contacted us and asked if we would like to host a clinic for the kids," said Matt Crippen, president of the 800-player Lac Saint Clair Little League. "I responded we would love to host the clinic." The clinic at Kyte Monroe Park starts a full day of baseball and softball opening day activities games for the Lac Saint Clair Little League.
