St. Clair Shores police officers were honored by the Optimist Club of St. Clair Shores for going above and beyond the call of duty during the annual Call to Courage awards and appreciation breakfast.

A woman pulled from Lake St. Clair Sunday by passersby entered the lake from the breakwall. She was not in a jet ski accident, her rescuers said.
The woman rescued Sunday by passersby Sunday ended up in Lake St. Clair from the breakwall rather than being involved in a jet ski crash as reported by the U.S. Coast Guard. Tom Cook, of Grosse Pointe Woods, was in Lake St. Clair on his jet ski when he saw two women on the breakwall waving him over, he said Tuesday. The women were standing on the breakwall holding the arms of a woman who was hanging in the water, he said. The woman was awake when he first approached but she became unconscious while they were trying to help her, Cook said. The circumstances under which she ended up in the water are not clear. Police Chief Michael Walleman informed attendees at the Optimist Club of St. Clair Shores annual Call to Courage breakfast that retired K9 officer Ivan died on May 1. Ivan served the department 2006-2011 with handler, Officer Matt Steppey. Sadly, he died on the same day as the memorial service was held at Blossom Heath Park for K9 officer Chase. He died on April 24 following surgical complications. Walleman said that Steppey kept the death of his "best friend" to himself until after the ceremony. To honor his Ivan's service, the department presented a plaque to Steppey.

The two-week Click It or Ticket campaign kicked-off Monday with enforcement zones across Macomb County, and Michigan.
Officers from the St. Clair Shores Police Department are among 155 departments in 26 counties across the state that are participating in Michigan's "Click It or Ticket" campaign. The federally funded campaign is meant to reverse a decline in the state's seat belt use rate that declined since hitting an all-time high of 97.9 percent in 2009, according to the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning. Officers across the state will be conducting safety belt enforcement zones during the next two weeks, including the Memorial Day holiday weekend. A woman who had an accident with a jetski Sunday was rescued by other boaters in Lake St. Clair. She was taken to a nearby hospital by Grosse Pointe public safety officers.
A woman sustained non-life threatening injuries Sunday in Lake St. Clair following an accident with a jet ski, U.S. Coast Guard Lt. Justin Westmiller said. The woman was struggling in the water off of Lake Shore Road near Clairview in Grosse Pointe Shores after a jet ski accident, he said. Other boaters rescued her before responding coast guard officers arrived, he said. She was taken by ambulance to an area hospital for medical attention, Westmiller said. The exact kind of injuries she sustained was not clear Monday but Westmiller said they were not life-threatening. Hundreds fled the scene following the incident at the St. Joan of Arc Festival late Saturday night, but no injuries were reported.
No injuries were reported Saturday night when a man fired a handgun into the air at the closing of the St. Joan of Arc Festival. St. Clair Shores Police Lt. Jason Allen said it's unclear what led to the incident or who was responsible. A report was filed at 11:07 p.m. to indicate that a single shot was fired in the parking lot across the street from the church at Overlake Street. Police were on-scene speaking with witnesses, who said that hundreds of people fled the area following the incident. Msgr. G. Michael Bugarin, St. Joan of Arc pastor, said there was an orderly shut down at the festival when the incident occurred off-site. Fire department investigators are working to determine the cause of a blaze on Arcadia Friday night.
Investigators from the St. Clair Shores Fire Department are working to determine the cause of a blaze Thursday night on Arcadia, between Greater Mack and Jefferson. According to fire department incident reports, a neighbor called in the fire at 8:30 p.m. Thursday. When fire fighters arrived, there was fire coming from the front area of the house. No was in the house, but crews were able to save a dog. The structure suffered smoke damage, and there were no injuries to any fire fighters. Check back with Patch for updates on this story.

The U.S. Coast Guard rescued two people Sunday from a canoe adrift in Lake St. Clair.
U.S. Coast Guard personnel from Air Station Detroit and Station St. Clair Shores were dispatched to rescue two people Sunday in Lake St. Clair. The Macomb County Sheriff's Office notified the U.S. Coast Guard just after 9 a.m. Sunday that a canoe carrying two people were adrift in Lake St. Clair, according to a release. According to officials, the individuals spoke Chinese and little English. They also reported they could see land but could not reach it as they were being pushed offshore due to strong winds. Using coordinates from one of the boater's cell phone transmissions, an aircrew from Air Station Detroit and boatcrew from Station St. Clair Shores were deployed to locate the boaters. A 27-year-old Macomb Township man died Sunday night in a Clinton Township accident, police said Monday morning. Around 11 p.m., a pickup truck crashed into the Macomb pedestrian on Hall Road near Dalcoma. The pickup driver, a 53-year-old St. Clair Shores man, stayed on the scene while the Macomb man was rushed to the hospital, according to Clinton Township police. Police reported that alcohol or speed did not appear to be a factor and no charges were filed against the driver by Monday. Witnesses are asked to call Clinton Township police to help their investigation.
