Volunteers Prepare for Memorial Day Parade

Planning is under way for the 2012 Memorial Day Parade with the theme "Freedom's not Free."

Organizers of the Memorial Day Parade are in full planning mode for the 60th edition of the St. Clair Shores tradition.

Fundraisers have been planned, volunteers are being sought and a logo created by a high school has been selected.

With less than three months to go, the St. Clair Shores Memorial Day Parade Committee is moving double-time to have everything ready when the annual event steps off at 1 p.m. on May 27 on Harper.

"We have a lot coming up for our 60th anniversary," said Robert Montgomery, parade chairman, when he recently requested and received permission from the city to hold the parade.

The annual parade draws tens of thousands of residents, families and veterans from the around the region for one of the largest Memorial Day events in the state.

This year the parade will have a logo designed by senior Sarah Skoney. Her design, featuring a silhouette of a soldier, was selected by a panel of veterans as the design which exemplified this year's theme.

"We congratulate Sarah on her success and thank her for participating in our first logo contest," said Cheryl Furdos, advertising and marketing chair for the committee in an email.

Skoney's design will appear on all parade items this year.

Other activities by the committee include:

  • A new website was established at http://sites.google.com/site/scsmemorialdayparade,
  • will be held at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, March 29, at 4:30pm at the. Admission is $10 for adults and seniors, $5 for children 10 and under. Music will be provided by Outrageous Jams.
  • A bowling fundraiser will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, May 4, at . Admission is $22 for those who pre-register and $25 on the day of the event.
  • Registration is open for the Sailing Thru the Shores fun run held before the parade. For more information, visit http://www.scsfunrun.org.

"It was a complete success last year," said Mayor Kip Walby, before council voted to approve the parade. "It kicks off the summer. It is a hallmark of St. Clair Shores."
