Volunteers Needed for Lake Cleanup

Annual event still in need of volunteers to help clear the Lake St. Clair shoreline of rubbish and debris.

The recent storms which have brought rain showers to the city, is also expected to blow sea debris and garbage onto the waterfront of St. Clair Shores.

This build-up of debris over the winter, and recent days, will be the target for teams of volunteers for the annual

"In the (coming days) we are going to have strong east winds and a lot will wash up," said Mark Hodorek, of the St. Clair Shores Waterfront Environmental Committee. "The need is still there (to clean the beaches)."

Over the past 15 years, volunteers have removed 519 tons of debris form the Lake St. Clair coastline.

This year, volunteers will be dispatched to the city's beaches and public waterfront areas. Seven homeowner groups will also be working to clear their neighborhood areas of debris.

Joe St. John, committee chairman, said the community works together to help make the event a success.

The hosts the check-in and volunteer lunch; the We Are Here Foundation helps fund the event through sales of donated boats; Waste Management donates four dumpsters; front end loaders from St. Clair Shores are used to help move debris; and buses from the Senior Activities Center are used to transport volunteers.

Volunteers are asked to check-in between 8-8:30 a.m. Sunday at Jefferson Yacht Club, and then will be assigned areas to clean. Volunteers are asked to bring rakes, gloves, boots and waders.
