Soccer Players Go Pink to Beat Cancer

Players, coaches and parents from the St. Clair Shores Select Soccer Club purchased pink t-shirts to raise funds to fight cancer.

Pink is the color of choice this October for players on the field, coaches on the sideline and parents in the stands of the St. Clair Shores Select Soccer Club.

Players on teams ranging from 7- to 16-years-old, along with parents and coaches, paid $25 for pink t-shirts to wear during October. Proceeds from the fundraiser will benefit American Cancer Society.

Rick Jacobs, one one of the coaches, said the idea for the fundraiser came from one of the coaches who had a close family member who was affected by cancer.

"Everybody got involved," said Jacobs, who added that some teams are also donating $1 per goal to the effort. "Somehow, someway, everybody's been affected by cancer."

Jacobs said the league didn't have a specific goal for the inaugural year, but was hoping to raise $500. The effort has already far exceed that amount, raising $1,500.

This is not the first community service effort by the soccer club. Previous efforts include donating food for Gleaners at a banquet.

"(The volunteer efforts) makes the kids more society conscious," said Jacobs, who is trying to build well-rounded individuals. "We are trying to build character."
