Kiwanis Hosts Farm Fun Day for Children

St. Clair Shores-based Lac Saint Claire Kiwanis host Kiwanis Kids Day at Wolcott Mill educational farm in Ray Township.

From the dusty trail leading up to the Wolcott Mill Metro Park Farm Learning Center grounds, the Lac Saint Claire Kiwanis Kids Day at the Farm event looked and sounded like a huge family picnic.

And when one arrived, it still felt like a family outing.

"The smiles of the children are what makes this all worth it," said Richard Swanquist, 52, of St. Clair Shores and Kiwanis member.

Kiwanis club president Bryan Mazey said the event was for children with special needs, special circumstances and anyone else who wanted to come along.

"I'm glad to see the children having a great time," said Mazey. "We want them to be happy and not have to worry about a thing today."

The annual event featured inflatable play-structures, clowns, music, food and all the agricultural educational features of the Metro Park. Children were given hayrides along with the opportunity to see live farm animals such as cows, goats, chickens and more up-close. They also got to see how milk is made, and much more from farm life.

Andrew Estes, 10, of Detroit was having a great time.

"This is all good," said Estes. "My favorite part was meeting the sheriff deputies (reserve unit). When I grow up, I want to be a cop because they get to do cool stuff, like protect people."

The event also featured the Macomb County Sheriff's Department bike patrol, K-9 unit and road patrol reserve units out to the event, as well as the Ray Township Fire Department, Rexford Therapeutic Call Team, Wolcott Mill staff and all the numerous volunteers that came out to support the Kiwanis event for the children.
