St. Clair Shores Memorial Day Parade Steps Off Today

One of the largest Memorial Day Parades in the state steps off at 1 p.m. on Harper. If you are planning to attend, Patch has some important tips about events around the city and suggestions on how to enjoy it safely.

Memorial Day will be a busy day in St. Clair Shores as events across the city are planned to honor veterans and celebrate the community.

  • Starting the day will be a Memorial Day service at 9 a.m. Sunday at . The will honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.
  • Starting at 11:30 a.m., city crews will begin closing the following roads to traffic:
    • Harper from 9 Mile to 11 Mile
    • 10 Mile, Frazho, 11 Mile will be closed from Little Mack to Jefferson.
  • Runners and walkers who will be participating in the Sailing Thru the Shores 5K Run/Walk can begin registering at 11 a.m. for the event at the  No. 553. The race begins at noon for runners and 12:05 p.m. for walkers. Cost to register is $25 per person.
  • At 1 p.m., it's time for the The theme for this year is "Freedom's Not Free" and will be led by Tara Perez, Commander of the VFW Bruce Post 1146. This year's parade features more than 100 participants and includes local military groups, scouts, Miss St. Clair Shores and her court along with a number of bands.
  • If you are heading to the parade, or spending any amount of time outside during the weekend, Dr. James Rosbolt, Medical Director,  urges parade-goers to be careful on the hot day with these tips:
    • Muscle cramping, headaches, nausea, red skin and a body can be signs of heat exhaustion.
    • To enjoy the parade safely, he recommends wearing light clothes, sunscreen, hydrate and avoid alcohol and caffeine.
    • If someone begins to feel the effects of the heat, get into the shade or an air conditioned building, put a cold cloth or cold pack on top of their head or neck.
    • Again, he recommends hydrating every 30 minutes with water or sports drink.
  • is presenting the U.S. Navy Marching Band in the parade. The band will also be performing a free concert at 7 p.m. Sunday at Lakeview High School.
