Triathlon Prepares To Race Through the Shores and Pointes

Volunteers and participants can still sign up for the the inaugural triathlon that begins in St. Clair Shores on Saturday and includes the Pointes.

Organizers of the inaugural Shores-Pointes Adventure Triathlon are in the final stretch of planning and recruitment for the event Saturday.

Athletes of all levels, from professional to rookies, are participating in the , which includes a run and bike race along Jefferson in St. Clair Shores and the Grosse Pointes, and a kayak race in Lake St. Clair. 

"It is going to be an awesome event," said Marianne Beach-Langlois, co-coordinator of the event.

Planning started earlier this year for the event, with organizers working with municipalities, the , the Macomb County Sheriff's Department Marine Division and public safety departments in the Shores and Pointes to plan for the event.

As of Monday night, 128 people have signed up for one of the events planned for the triathlon. Organizers report 78 people have signed up for the triathlon itself, with participants coming from throughout Michigan and the Great Lakes states—and one participant from Colorado.

"The whole atmosphere is awesome. When you have these elite athletes cheering you on it is an incredible feeling," said Lynda Charow, co-organizer. "I am so excited so many people have signed up."

Rather than the traditional swim, the USA Triathlon-sanctioned event starts with a 2.1-mile kayak event at the , followed by a 13.4-mile bike race before bringing the athletes back to Blossom Heath for a 5K run.

In addition to strengthening the bodies of participants, the organizers will be helping build the youth in the community by dividing profits equally among the Shores and Pointes high school athletic programs including , , , Grosse Pointe North and Grosse Pointe South.

The event also falls during the annual  Aquafest. The association changed the date of the event to coincide with the event. This year it will run from Thursday, July 14, through Sunday, July 17.

About the event:

  • Volunteers are also needed. Anyone who wants to lend a hand can go to shorespointestri.com or email shorespointtri@hfhs.org.
  • There will be other races that can be done as an individual or as a team, such as a duathlon, which is a 5K run followed by the bike race, followed by another 5K run or a 5K run/walk alone.
  • A spaghetti dinner is planned for Friday, July 15, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at Henry Ford Medical Center Cottage. Proceeds generated by dinner donations will go the center’s Department of Pediatrics Autism Program.
  • The Shores-Pointes Adventure Triathlon kicks off at 7 a.m. July 16 at Blossom Heath Park. Those who wish to compete can go to shorespointestri.com to register until 11:59 p.m. Wednesday. Fees are $65 for an individual triathlon, $135 for a relay team and $25 for an individual 5K walk or run.
