Storm Doesn't Deter Triathletes in St. Clair Shores

Athletes were challenged Saturday to test the abilities in the annual Shores-Pointes Adventure Triathlon.

Just after dawn Saturday athletes young and old embarked on a kayak-bike-run race through St. Clair Shores and the Grosse Pointes.

While the weather was clear for the event, downed power lines caused race organizers to change the route for the run. The storms Friday also knocked down the transition area in Blossom Heath Park.

"The city really stepped up," said event organizer Lynda Charow, who thanked the Department of Public Works and Parks and Recreation for clearing away storm debris and preparing the park for the race.

She also credited the volunteers, led by the Grosse Pointe Rotary Club, for making the event a success.

"They rallied volunteers this year," said Charow. "They did a great job getting everyone where they needed to be."

This is the third year of the event which attracted nearly 200 athletes from across the region, and country, and brings together volunteers including members of the Lake Shore Football Quarterback Club.

Among the participants were three generations of the Binson family.

Pam Binson, her children and grandchildren took part in the race.

"It is really gratifying they support me and stay in shape," Pam Binson said.
