South Lake Hoops Soars, Lakers Ready for Showdowns

New and improved Pick of the Week takes sports fans back to the week that was, and ahead to the best matchups and events in town.

First of all, let me start out by saying a big “Thank You” to everyone who e-mailed in response to last week’s column. The response was really good, and as a result, this little column is going to be better.

Please keep these comments, suggestions and ideas coming.

Without your help, I can’t recognize any of the outstanding efforts put in by athletes all over the area—from the little ones all the way to our senior citizens. Everyone has a place on Patch.com, and in this column.

A Look Back

  • A salute to the wrestling team who advanced all the way to the district finals this week before falling to Marysville. Great run, Huskies.
  • The girls hoops squad from ousted a pair of tough opponents this past week, Clawson and Marysville. The team appears to be rounding into form as the regular season winds down—just in time to turn some heads in districts. Great job, Coach Charrette, and the rest of the Cavs.
  • Also, we have to give credit to the for a strong showing this past week at the Michigan Public High School Hockey Invitational Showcase. The squad played to 4-4 ties in matchups against a pair of very strong teams—Waterford Kettering and Royal Oak.

A Look Ahead

  • Sticking with the hockey theme, the Lakers have two big Macomb Area Conference Red Division games this week—both at Civic Arena. The first, Feb. 16 at 7:30 p.m. against Stevenson High, and the second, Feb. 19 against Dakota, also at 7:30 p.m. Both these competitors are ahead of the Lakers in the division, and the team would love to make up some ground this week
  • Thursday, Feb. 17, tip-off at 7 p.m. at Lakeview High, it’s the and Huskies boys basketball teams. There is nothing better than a good rivalry game and this is a good one. Both squads are in the middle of the pack in the MAC Silver and looking to get some momentum heading into the closing stretch.
  • This column wouldn’t be complete without a Pickleball mention. That’s right, Pickleball. Don’t laugh—it sounds funny but it’s a really cool game played at the Bon Brae Center right here in the Shores. I encourage everyone, particularly seniors in town, to check the game out. You’re going to love it!
