Soccer Tournament Prepares to Kick Off in the Shores

The St. Clair Shores Waterfront Invitational is drawing teams from the Midwest and beyond.

Dozens of teams will be looking to get their kicks this weekend in the Shores for the annual Waterfront Invitational soccer tournament

Organizers of the event, which is in its 14th year, are expecting upwards of 140 teams from as far away as Toronto and Indiana.

While the games provide a venue for some of the best teams in the region, the tournament will donate proceeds back to the city.

"The money from the tournament will be donated to the house league and the St. Clair Shores Special Needs program," said Bryant Goodreau, who is one of the organizers of the tournament.

The event donates more than $4,000 to the program.

The tournament starts at 5 p.m. Friday at the fields around , and

Games start as early as 7 a.m. Saturday, and Sunday will feature the playoffs for the various age levels.

In addition to the teams that are competing, Goodreau added that college coaches were expected to attend the tournament.

"They are coming to see the girls who will be playing for them next year," he said. 

Business owners are also looking forward to the added business that will be generated by the soccer players and their families.

"It should be a fun weekend," said Kristina Acovski, daughter-in-law of the owners of Rose's Family Dining. "We look forward to the sports weekends."
