Silver Stick Hockey Hits the Ice at Civic Arena

St. Clair Shores Civic Arena is hosting some of the top mite/novice hockey teams this weekend from the United States and Canada for the Silver Stick International Finals.

The rinks at will be filled this weekend with some of the top 7- and 8-year-old hockey teams from the United States and Canada for the Silver Stick International Finals.

Teams from as far aways as Pheonix and Toronto began playing Friday, and will compete throughout the weekend in hopes of making it to the championship games Sunday.

"This is a prestigous tournament," said Bill Selengowski, tournament director. "To get to an international tournament is an accomplishment."

The tournament has been held in St. Clair Shores for 28 years, and is hosted by the St. Clair Shores Hockey Association. This year it includes 42 teams, with five of the teams from Michigan. The remainder are from other states and provinces.

"This is very good hockey for this age group," Selengowski added.

Teams which won the tournament in December at Civic Arena are also in action this weekend:

  • The Grosse Pointe-based 1997 Michigan Ice Hawks won the Bantam AA division of the Regional Silver Stick Tournament and are playing in the International Silver Stick Tournament this weekend in Port Huron.
  • Also in Port Huron this weekend will be the PeeWee Travel AA team St. Clair Shores Saints, who won their regional at Civic Arnea.
