Pond Hockey Tournament to Return to Lake St. Clair

Organizers are planning a weekend of games for the Nautical Mile Pond Hockey Winter Classic, and hoping for cold temperatures to freeze the Lake St. Clair.

Organizers of the Nautical Mile Pond Hockey Winter Classic are hoping for a traditional winter this year to allow for a weekend of outdoor hockey games on Lake St. Clair.

The inaugural tournament had been planned for this past January, but unseasonably warm temperatures and a lack of ice led to the cancellation of the event.

Even though Mother Nature didn't cooperate, there is still a large amount of interest in the event by sponsors, organizers and teams.

"All the ground work was set out last year," said Greg Esler, St. Clair Shores Parks and Recreation director. "We are excited about it."

The 4-on-4 adult pond hockey tournament event is scheduled for Jan. 25-27 on the canals next to Brownie's on the Lake, which is the host restaurant for the event.

The outdoor tournament for players 21-years-old and older, and each team will have at least three games, with semi-finals and championships on Sunday.

Esler said 26 teams have already registered for the tournament this year, and many of the previous sponsors have returned including Roy O'Brien Ford, Emerald City Marina, Budweiser, Henry Ford Health System and Superior Ambulance.

Donna Flaherty, president of the Nautical Mile Merchants Association which is also a sponsor, said the tournament will boost mid-winter business along the restaurant and marina district, and in the city.

"It is going to bring people to the Nautical Mile," Flaherty said. "We are looking forward to welcoming them to the city."
