Pond Hockey Tournament Rescheduled for February

Warm weather has forced organizers of the inaugural Nautical Mile Pond Hockey Winter Classic to reschedule the tournament for Feb 10-12.

Organizers of the inaugural announced Thursday the tournament will be rescheduled for the second weekend in February.

With temperatures predicted to be around 40 in the coming days and the current lack of ice on the canals next to Brownies on the Lake—where the tournament will be played—the Winter Classic was moved from the weekend of Jan. 20-22 to Feb. 10-12.

Gina Rheaume, recreation sports manager for department, said the 64 teams currently registered will have the option to remain in the tournament or withdraw for a full refund.

"We anticipate the attendance will be the same," said Rheaume, who added there are currently 34 teams on a waiting list.

"We hope Mother Nature will cooperate with six inches of ice," Rheaume said of the ice thickness needed for any machinery to be on the ice.
