Lakeview, Roosevelt, Trenton Baseball Teams Get Tourney Tested

Huskies welcome Trenton, Wyandotte Roosevelt, L'Anse Creuse, Warren Mott and Warren Cousino and gain valuable experience.

Saturday baseball tournaments mean much more to teams and coaches than just wins and losses and tournament titles.

In most cases, these three-to-four-game, all-day events are dress rehearsals for the biggest tournament of the season—the state playoffs.

“It’s definitely something that you’re thinking about,” coach Frank DiCristofaro said. “Being able to play against good competition in tournaments like this is a big help.”

DiCristofaro’s Huskies advanced to the title game of the tourney, where they squared off against L’Anse Creuse High.

A trio of first-inning runs was enough for the Lancers, who cruised to a 7-0 victory over Lakeview in the final.

coach Brian Cotner found Saturday’s tournament to be a very good experience for his team.

“It’s really good for us because it’s going to different teams, and in some cases it’s going to be back-to-back games,” Cotner said. “So after one game you might have to sit around for two hours, then another time you might have to get right back out there. That’s good for us. It really is.”

The Bears ousted Warren Cousino, 12-7, in their tournament opener behind a strong offensive performance from Chase Schmittou and Hunter Matt.

Matt’s fifth-inning, three-run double pushed the Bears lead from 8-7 to 11-7.

Wyandotte’s Devan Stewart got the win against the Patriots.

met up with host school Lakeview and edged the Huskies, 3-1.

Jordan Conti was stellar on the mound in earning the victory.

“We set our schedule up a certain way because we don’t want the kids to know what to expect on the weekend,” Trenton coach Todd Szalka said. “We want them to come out and play every game because they might not know much about the team they’re playing. It also gives us a chance to see some different teams from around the state. The more opportunities that we get in a tournament format, the better it is for us.”
