Lake Shore Alum George Allen Heading to the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame

George Allen, a 1937 graduate of Lake Shore High School and Hall of Fame coach, will be inducted tonight into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame.

According to his biography on the Pro Football Hall of Fame website, Allen didn't miss a day of school while attending Lake Shore and lettered in football, basketball, and track before graduating in 1937.

Allen went on to serve in the U.S. Navy in World War II, and graduate from the University of Michigan. He coached in college before becoming an assistant NFL coach.

He got his first chance to be an NFL head coach in 1966 for the Los Angeles Rams and later the Washington Redskins. According to the Hall of Fame, he had a career record of 118-54-5, and never had a losing season.

He was quoted in the article saying, "Most men succeed because they are determined to."

Allen, who died in 1990, will be inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame tonight during a ceremony at the Gem Theater in Detroit.

"We are very excited to announce that the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame's 56th Induction Event will return to Detroit," said Scott Lesher, MSHOF chairman, in a release. "The 56th Induction Event at the Gem Theater in the literal shadow of Comerica Park and Ford Field will serve as a homecoming for not only the members of this prestigious class, but also for the family, friend and fans of these sporting legends from areas throughout Michigan."
