Girls Hoops Squads Tip Off Title Quests

Lake Shore, Lakeview and South Lake begin state playoffs

This week begins a very exciting stretch in high school sports–the basketball playoffs.

With that in mind, I’m planning on dedicating this little column this week to the girls hoops teams who will take the floor beginning Monday evening with the hopes of making a run at the game’s ultimate prize– a state championship.

What each of these local teams did in the regular season means little at this point, and with the one-and-done format of the state tournament, there is no room for a bad game.

I can’t stress to you enough how much fun it is to get out to one of these postseason ball games.

The intensity is wonderful, the atmosphere is incredible and the tension is always high as every possession is so important.

With that said, let’s take a brief glance at the district round of the 2011 girls basketball state tournament.

  • Both Lakeview and Lake Shore travel to Grosse Pointe South for the opening round of the state tourney. The Shorians square off against a very good East Detroit squad March 2 at 5:30 p.m., while Lakeview gets the winner of the Grosse Pointe North vs. Grosse Pointe South game at 7 p.m. the same night.
  • The winners of each of these two semifinals contests will battle for the district crown March 4 at 7 p.m.
  • South Lake travels down the road to Harper Woods for their district opener against the host school Feb. 28 at 7 p.m.
  • Should the Cavs get past Harper Woods, they’ll meet up with Center Line March 2 at 5:30 p.m. in the first district semifinal. The finals are slated for March 4 at 6 p.m.
