The Olympia rink at St. Clair Shores Civic Arena is in the midst of a major renovation

The former wooden dasher boards at the rink have been replaced with polyethylene boards and a steel frame that should last about 30 years, according to Brandon Abel, director of maintenance for Civic Arena.

The new rink is being built by Becker Arena Products, which is installing nearly 90 rinks nationwide this year. Abel added that the new rink is similar to the new boards and glass installed by the Nashville Predators.

Work should be complete, and skaters should be on the ice, next week.
